A newly formed group “Nevis Pearls,” which was formed in January 2008 by the Department of Social Services in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) extended free counseling services to girls who demonstrated at risk behaviours.

To signal the end of a first 12 weeks session, the Department held its closing ceremony on April 11, 2008, at the Oualie conference Room, in recognition of the participation of 20 girls selected by School Counselors from the two public Secondary Schools.

Minister of Social Transformation in the NIA Hon. Hensley Daniel, in his keynote address said the 12 weeks programme strategy was an early intervention in the lives of the girls before they fell through society’s cracks.

He also said the programme represented a paradigm shift away from blaming, to a more proactive one, which guided the girls towards more positive pursuits.

So says Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Tourism and Sustainable Development, Hon. Dr. Denzil l. Douglas, who pointed out that Foreign Direct Investment in St. Kitts and Nevis over the years, has “outstripped and surpassed the rest of the Caribbean islands, especially in the Eastern Caribbean.”

“This is part of the overall thrust for the development of St. Kitts and Nevis, especially providing appropriate modern entertainment facilities for our people,” said Prime Minister Douglas as he toured the construction site at Buckley’s Estate von the outskirts of Basseterre, the capital.

Players from the Len Harris Cricket Academy team were grateful for the opportunity on Saturday, to discuss mental discipline and the rules of the game with members of the world’s oldest cricket club.

Head Coach of the 15-man squad from the Marylebone Cricket Club, Tony Cottey and four other players explored advanced techniques of fielding and batting as well as some of the technical and mental sides of the sport with approximately 12 players from St. Kitts.

“They taught me a lot,” said Andrez, a 16 year old player, as he explained how he now avoids hitting the ball to fielders at mid on or mid off. “When I play [the ball] on my front foot, I lean back and “¦ that causes the ball to go up in the air. They told me I have to keep my head over the ball and play it on the ground. I learnt a lot more about the game,” he concluded.
