Young people are the focus this April, as the Youth Division of the Social Services Department celebrates Youth Month, 2008, in Nevis.

On Choice FM’s Radio program, Breakfast Menu with host, Walter Morton, Youth Coordinator of the Nevis Social Services Department, Miss Claudia Walwyn, took the opportunity to outline the theme and the activities for the month.

“The theme this year is: Creating a Safe Environment Through Informed and Healthy Choices. We want all youths to go out and take part in the celebration of young people on our island. I believe the activities planned have something for everyone,” said Miss Walwyn.

The month long activities will see the launch of an Inter-school Chess Championship led by Rudy Davis. During the interview Miss Walwyn articulated, “We are extremely happy to add an Inter school Chess Championship to our month of activities and we are even happier to note that the winner of the chess championship will receive a trophy, compliments of Nevis Social Services Department.”

Among the other activities outlined by Miss Walwyn were an Easter Camp, a voice training workshop for the boys’ choir, the Youth group celebration rally and a Youth Parliament debate.

The Nevis Island Administration has recognised the central role of young people in every form of development; and since assuming office in July, 2006, a number of policy decisions have been taken to demonstrate the government’s commitment to the young people of Nevis.
