St. Kitts – Nevis Citizens Urged To Cash In On Sports Tourism

Residents have been urged to prepare themselves to tap into the benefits of the growing sports tourism sub-sector in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas gave the encouragement after touring the Bird Rock athletic stadium on Tuesday. The Prime Minister explained that the track and field facility ““ slated as the venue for the 2008 CARIFTA Games ““ and other sporting facilities including the main stadium Warner Park, will play a vital role in the success of the sub-sector.

“This [the staging of the games] is a big step in the development of sports tourism in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said the Prime Minister. “We continue to be engaged in the transformation of our national economy. We continue to move out of sugar “¦ and establish services, especially tourism related services, as the main stay of this new emerging economy. Sports tourism is one of the planks on which the new economy “¦ will be established.”

St. Kitts – Nevis PM Proud Of Efforts To Host CARFITA Games

Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas and Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency John Liu toured the future home of the 2008 CARIFTA Games at Bird Rock on Tuesday and were impressed with the level of professionalism employed by the local workforce in constructing the facility.

The tour was conducted by Wycliffe Morton Jr. the construction Project Manager of the Bird Rock athletic stadium. He was supported by the general managers of Raymore and Associates and Rock and Dirt, the two local companies constructing the Class 2 track and field facility. Other members of the touring party included Minister of State for Sports Hon. Richard Skerritt and his Permanent Secretary as well as officials from other government agencies and representatives from the local athletic association and organizing committee for the games.

Nevis Culture Officials Speak On St. Johns Fest

The St. Johns Festival dubbed the St. Johns Fest is fast approaching and Special Advisor to Culture Mr. Halstead Byron made an early appeal to residents of the St Johns community to take advantage and become involved in the Festival that is slated for the Easter weekend. 
 
He said in order to accommodate everyone in the community, the festive activities would not be held in one permanent place but would spread throughout the St Johns community.
 
The festive activities would commence on March 21st, at the Flats in Cole Hill, with the traditional kite flying contest and Food Fair on Good Friday.
 
An organised cure for Cancer Walk is scheduled among activities for Saturday March 22nd. During the evening hours a Queen and Calypso show competition is planned for Bath Village.
