St. Kitts – Nevis Continues HIV / AIDS Testing

After a successful debut at the St. Paul’s Community Centre, the National AIDS Secretariat continues its convenient and confidential, community HIV Testing at the Cayon Primary School on Tuesday, May 13.

The second Community HIV Testing Day will commence at 4:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:00 p.m.

Ms. Lucine Pemberton, Health Educator and Counsellor as well as Coordinator of the Community HIV Testing Day, said that the upcoming event caters to residents of Keys and Cayon.  She reminded the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service that the service was requested by members of the general public, and it caters to residents who work outside of the Basseterre area, or have limited mobility.

Ms. Pemberton explained that just like the HIV Testing Days held in Basseterre, nurses and professional health personnel along with trained Voluntary Counselling and Testing Providers will be on hand, first to counsel then administer the test.  The Community HIV Testing Day coordinator was also pleased to reveal that test results should be returned approximately one hour after testing, as once again, AVALON Medical Laboratory will be on site to analyze samples.

A 13-year-old student at the Basseterre High School, who represented Constituency #1 during the Miss Labour Queen Pageant, walked away with the coveted title from a field of eight contestants on Saturday night.

Rae-Dawn Thomas, who gave a powerful message in her performing talent, gaining 172 of a possible 180 points in that segment, amassed an overall total of 511.5 points.

National Political Leader of the governing St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party and Prime Minister of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas robed the winner and her Parliamentary Representative for East Basseterre, Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin, placed the crown before a massive crowd at Carnival Village.

First runner-up with 464.5 points was Vashni Belle of Constituency #7 (Ottley’s to Belle Vue). Tamara Francis of Constituency # 2 (Central Basseterre) was Second Runner-Up with 391.5 points and the Third Runner up position went to Ashley Browne of Constituency # 5 (Fig Tree/Sandy Point). She received 383 points.

Youth Month in Nevis culminated Wednesday April 25, 2008 with a grand finale rally that climaxed at the Nevis Cultural Center. The event was organised in collaboration with the newly launched Peer Unit of the Youth Division and included entertainment from various youth groups and individuals.
 
On hand at the event was Minister responsible for Youth and Social Development in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel, who urged the youths of Nevis to abstain from promiscuous and anti-social behaviour, read avidly, make informed healthy choices and to set good examples for other youths, who did not experience the impact of the rally.
 
Mr. Daniel said the young people of Nevis represented the island’s greatest hope, opportunities and greatest challenges. The government he said was focused on the positive to help them stay on course.
 
“In the Nevis Island Administration we do not overlook the energy of the young people. We encouraged responsibility of self and we actually are excited about the agitation and the demands of the young people.
 
“With regards to the inclusion of the decision making process, we do not share the view that young people are the men and women of tomorrow but we say they are the men and women of today. Since we came to government in 2006, there is a young person on the Board of every Public Corporation in Nevis and that young person is given the same responsibility and the same amount of authority as the Board’s older adults,” Mr. Daniel said.

The outfield of the Warner Park cricket stadium and the practice turf of the Len Harris Cricket Academy will remain in top shape when the Australian and West Indies cricket teams battle in St. Kitts on July 4 and 6.

The regular maintenance schedule of the Ministry of Sports coupled with the recent donation by Reginald Francis of St. Kitts Marine Works, will ensure this.

Mr. Francis explained that he held discussions with the grounds men at Warner Park and learnt that a specialized type of sand was required to aid the nourishment of the field. He added that the sand is not native to St. Kitts and Nevis and so he acquired the coarse sand from St. Maarten.

“St. Kitts Marine Works “¦ transported it [the sand] via barge, we trucked it here to Warner Park and took care of all of the expenses,” Francis said, adding that the investment in sports is money well spent as it positively impacts young people.
