Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry said he is pleased with The 7th Nevis Triathlon, 2009, and its promotion of Sports Tourism on Nevis.
The Premier made the statement on receiving information that St. Kitts-Nevis Athletes, Reggie Douglas and Kristina Stoney took the 2009 OECS Triathlon Championship for the Male and Female categories during the Carino sponsored Nevis Olympic Triathlon on Sunday, March 15th 2009.
Both athletes were presented with their winning trophies amid the loud applause and cheers of onlookers who had lined the streets of the Charlestown waterfront to witness the event.
The Olympic Distance Male category saw Ed Gardo Valez of Puerto Rico come in first, Rafael Colon, also of Puerto Rico, a close second and Reggie Douglas, of Nevis, third.
Among the women, Janine Herweijer from the Netherlands was first, Kristina Stoney of Nevis second and Jayme Goldberg of the USA followed in third place.
The sporting activity hosted by the Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club, brought together over 128 competitors from 19 countries including the United States of America., Europe, Trinidad, Martinique, Puerto Rico and St. Kitts-Nevis.
The Event Director, Mr. Winston Crooke said, “I am stunned by the number of persons who took part in this event and have embraced the triathlon and Nevis as a venue. Each year we are seeing buoyancy in the number of participants and supporters. It’s been a struggle to get here with very little money, but finally we are starting to see the pay off.”
