The Nevis Department of Education welcomed the new programme launched by the Social Services Department to incorporate students and seniors through the Inter-generational Exchange programme.
The Ministry of Education and by extension the Department of Education welcomed the new initiative which allows students interaction with senior citizens within the community. The launch of the programme was hosted at the St. Thomas Primary School on September 23, 2013. In remarks Education Officer responsible for St. Thomas Primary School, Mrs. Avril Elliott welcomed the new initiative on behalf of the Department expressed her expectations for the programme.
“On behalf of the Ministry and the Department of Education I would like to extend a warm welcome to the seniors to the St. Thomas Primary School…I’m hoping that at the end of this day you would be able to draw some more youth from the children as you interact with them and that Mrs. Garcia and the others would probably make a decision to make this event an annual event,” she said.
“So often we think that our seniors place is really in the home looking at the television and in their rocking chair but looking at them this morning, they don’t look like people to be in their rocking chair at all… This initiative…could very-well be produced in other schools, I think this is an excellent initiative,” she stated.
