The Department of Social Development’s single-parent support group has gone beyond its regular activities to make a well-appreciated contribution to Cancer Care Nevis.

The 11-member group that works toward the development of single parents and children, made the monetary donation last week at the Social Services Department next to the Elquemedo T. Willett Park.

Support Coordinator for Cancer Care Nevis Ms. Tracy Parris, accepted the donation on the organisation’s behalf and encouraged Nevisians to “take care of themselves.”

“You don’t know how grateful we are and how this money is going to come in very handy. I would just like to continue asking people to support us, check your health, have regular checkups: that goes for men and women because there are different kinds of cancers,” Ms. Parris said.

Cancer Care Nevis, according to Support Coordinator Parris, was founded by Mrs. Lee Parris-Cambridge and was formerly known as “Pink Lily Breast Cancer Care.”

Member of the single-parent support groupMs. Theodora Jonesprovided background information on the developing group and spoke highly of its multiplying effect.

“The single parent support group is a team of women who work towards the welfare and advancement of persons in the group, hoping that they in turncan motivate and enhance the lives of single parents in a broader community,” she explained.

The group meets weekly at the Department of SocialServices where its members “discuss issues relating to their roles as single parents, facilitate cooking classes, organise educational sessions for single-parents in the community and host fund raising events.”
