Cayon Continues To Dominate A Division

The first scheduled game of the St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association Premier Division scheduled for Sunday 8th May 2011, saw S. L. Horsfords Rootsie, a former A-Division team challenging the 2010 Finals Runners up, Cotton Ground Rebels. As the whistle signaled the end of the 1st half Rootsie was in the lead holding on by one point 32 to 31 and at the end of the third quarter they held a 9 point lead, putting in question Rebels’ outlook for the season. The game however ended 81 to 69 in favour of Cotton Ground Rebels who exhibited a spectacular momentum in the last quarter finishing strong, showing themselves worthy of being called Nevis’ elite team.
Outstanding players for Cotton Ground Rebels were Everson Webbe 36 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals, Royden Browne 13 points, 13 rebounds and 1 steal and Kurt Herbert 11 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 steals. Despite the setback for Rootsie Marcus Natta achieved 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks, Donald Caines 11 points, 1 rebound and 2 assists and Jason Norford 8 points 1 rebound and 2 assists.
When asked how his team took the defeat, Coach Dwayne Sturge said he was disappointed with the loss as he felt they played well enough to win the game, however the missed free throws and missed rebounds lead to challenges they did not overcome. “All in all as far as the attitude of the team, they have a renewed approach and outlook to the season, they are more positive about maintaining their position and becoming a contending team in the Premier Division.”
Three other games were rained out this weekend highlighting once again the too often experienced hindrance to a successful basketball league. Is this an indication that SKABA should change their regular season to avoid the rainy time of the year or is it about time that facilities are put in place to counter the weather?
In other match-ups for the week ending Friday 13th May Quakers proved too much for the newcomers Old Road.
Jason Liburd was explosive with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals Leroy Martin averaged 13 points, 1 rebound, 4 assists and 2 steals and Kurt Carty and Tyrone Southwell aided the win with a total of 19 points between them. At Half time the score was in favour of Quakers 42 to 27.
Old Road seemed unable to catch their stride all night as the more experienced Quakers dominated every quarter. Outstanding scorers for Old Road were Altyne Issac amassing 18 points, 4 rebounds 1 assist and 2 steals, Jason Jarvis with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals and Anthony Silliday averaging 9 points 11 rebounds and 1 steal. The Game ended 93 to 59 with a Victory for Quakers.
The second A Division game commenced that evening with former Premier team Cayon Lions matching up against The Blue Devils. Lions made easy work of the Blue Devils in the second half of the game despite their admirable run in the third quarter. Cayon won with a 20 point lead over Blue Devils, final score 91 to 71.
Omarie Warner of Cayon Lions matched the 15 points scored by the Blue Devils team in the fourth quarter and attained an outstanding 29 points, 9 rebounds 1 assist and 4 steals. Also from Lions were Giron Browne 21 points, 13 rebounds and 2 steals and Dave Pondt 19 points, 6 rebounds 2 assists, 6 steals and 1 block
For the Blue Devils, Jayson Esdaille scored 16 points 5 rebounds and 1 assist, Kareem Gerald recorded 15 points and 9 rebounds and Scilachi Robinson 15 points 5 rebounds 4 assists 8 steals and 1 block.
