Locals can now gain an internationally certified competency level in various computer fields by participating in training and/or examinations at the National Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Center.

During an appearance on SKNIS Perspectives this week, ICT Policy Advisor, Pierre Bowrin revealed that the facility gained accreditation as an authorized test center for the electronic testing company Pearson VUE a few weeks ago, completing a process which began late last year.

According to its official website, Pearson VUE provides a full suite of services from test development to data management, and delivers exams through the world’s most comprehensive and secure network of test centers in 165 countries.

Mr. Bowrin stated that while there are many training subject areas, he was particularly excited about the courses on computer hardware support, internet security, Linux management, web development and CISCO networking. He added that internet competency was also offered.

“Information Technology is for everyone and it is important for everyone to be able to maneuver on the internet,” said Bowrin, citing that young persons and those not so young should embrace the new technologies.

“Many services are now online, as the Department of Technology moves toward providing essential services for citizens. [As such], we all must be able to maneuver the internet.”

Training courses will be conducted in the main computer laboratory while examinations will be sat in a recently commissioned computer lab. The ICT Policy Advisor praised the locally-based Taiwanese Embassy for its contributions to the center and assistance in the process of getting Pearson VUE accreditation.

He explained that the National ICT Center was poised to continue meeting its mandate of being an engine of growth and training in the Information Technology sector.

“The Pearson VUE test center achievement is just the first phase. We are now in the process to proceed beyond that and achieve two other test center designations,” Bowrin revealed. “One will be Prometric, and that will allow us to offer Microsoft type certifications, and the other will be ICDL (International Computer Drivers License). That will be completed in the next few weeks, “¦ so the journey continues.”

Pearson VUE exams will be offered from July 1. Interested individuals can learn more about Pearson VUE courses and other available services by emailing [email protected] or calling 465-0610.
