Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew, joined by members of the Cabinet, hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of two solar-powered water desalination plants at Canada Industrial State. Held on March 18, the event marked a major step forward in strengthening water security and advancing sustainable development across the twin-island nation.

A New Milestone for National Water Security

The project is expected to be completed within the year and will provide significant relief to residents facing water shortages. Each plant will have the capacity to produce up to 76,000 gallons of potable water per day, improving access and supporting long-term community well-being.

The desalination initiative is part of a collaborative effort between St Kitts and Nevis and the United Arab Emirates through the UAE–Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund. This partnership has enabled the construction of facilities capable of generating 12 cubic meters of fresh drinking water every hour, powered by renewable energy.

Government Leadership and Support

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Drew praised Minister of Public Infrastructure Konris Maynard and his team for their dedication to the project. He noted that the Minister’s engineering background has played a key role in advancing the work efficiently and responsibly.

Prime Minister’s Remarks

The Prime Minister emphasized that achieving a sustainable island state requires strong progress in water security. He outlined that reliable water access is one of the most critical factors for national resilience and economic growth.

Minister Maynard’s Perspective

Minister Maynard expressed gratitude to the UAE for their generous contribution and ongoing support. He explained that the desalination project aligns with the government’s broader commitment to sustainability and renewable energy adoption.

He added that the Cabinet, under the guidance of Prime Minister Drew, is committed to restoring a continuous, round-the-clock water supply for all citizens and residents of St Kitts and Nevis. The Minister noted that the new facilities represent a major step toward achieving this goal.

Looking Ahead

The construction of the solar-powered desalination plants signals a future in which the nation can rely less on rainfall and more on innovative, sustainable water solutions. As the project moves forward, it stands as a symbol of cooperation, technological progress, and a strong commitment to the well-being of the people of St Kitts and Nevis.
