The Ministry of Tourism in Nevis is preparing to host the Nevis Garden Competition 2024, an event designed to strengthen community involvement, support healthy eating habits, and enhance the natural beauty of the island. The competition highlights the importance of gardening across households and business institutions, offering participants an opportunity to showcase their skills and creativity.

Event Overview

The competition features three main categories: Ornamental Plants, Vegetable Gardens, and Fruit Trees. Judging will take place during the week of July 8 to 12, and winners will be announced on Friday, July 19, 2024. The event is open to all residents of Nevis, including private households, institutions, and businesses.

To maintain fairness, judges are not allowed to enter the competition, nor may they register properties in the name of any other person.

Rules and Guidelines

Vegetable Garden Requirements

Participants entering the Vegetable Garden category must include at least three of the following five crop types:

  • Leafy green vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, or cabbage, with a minimum of 12 plants.
  • Condiments and seasonings like thyme, rosemary, mint, or onions, occupying at least 12 square feet.
  • Tubers or root vegetables including carrots, beets, sweet potatoes, or yam, also occupying at least 12 square feet.
  • Fruits or vegetables such as tomato, okra, sweet pepper, watermelon, or squash, with a minimum area of 12 square feet.
  • Legumes or pulses like peas or string beans, occupying at least 12 square feet.

Flower Garden Requirements

Entries in the Flower Garden category will be judged on a range of features, including:

  • Blooms and flowering plants
  • Greenery such as palms and ferns
  • Uncommon or unique plants
  • A special or focal feature
  • Overall attractiveness

Fruit Tree Requirements

  • Participants must include a combination of at least 10 fruit trees.
  • Each fruit tree must be at least one year old.
