In recognition of World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) 2015, the St. Kitts – Nevis Ministry of Consumer Affairs has scheduled a week of activities under the theme “Helping Consumers Choose Healthy Diets.”

A press release from the department noted that “unhealthy diets are linked to four of the ten biggest causes of death worldwide including being overweight and obese; high blood pressure; high blood glucose and high cholesterol.” Thus the decision was made by Consumer International to make “Helping Consumers Choose Healthy Diets” the theme of World Consumer Rights Day.

The press release also noted that “all consumers deserve the right not just to food, but to healthy food.”

The Ministry therefore encourages consumers to eat healthy. It suggests buying fresh fruits and vegetables instead of salty and sugary packaged foods to eat as snacks, to buy meat from local farmers in your area or at a grocery store, look for grass-fed meat and dairy products without hormones or antibiotics and instead of ice cream, save calories and fat by drinking a fruit and low-fat yogurt smoothie instead.

The week of activities commences on Sunday, March 15, 2015 with a church service at the Antioch Baptist Church. Minister of Consumer Affairs the Hon. Lindsay Grant will make remarks. This will be broadcasted on ZIZ television at 7:50 p.m. and on ZIZ radio on March 16, at 7:30 a.m.

Other highlights include a consumer information programme and give always on ZIZ radio from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m on March 16. On March 20, an open house at the Consumer Affairs Department from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. will take place.

World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated annually on March 15th to highlight solidarity within the international consumer movement.
