Legal Advisor to the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Attorney Patrice Nisbett, announced recently that the NIA was in a round of negotiations with West Indies Power (Nevis) Ltd, to establish clear-cut agreements that would govern the island’s geothermal resource.

Nisbett disclosed that negotiations would be devoted to the Geothermal Resource Contract (GRC) and a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to be established between Nevis Electricity Company Ltd (NEVLEC) and WIP.

He further disclosed that the GRC negotiations would deal with the requisite correct licenses, in accordance with legislation passed and gazetted. He also spoke of other substantive issues to be negotiated.

Local interest in the geothermal operations on Nevis continued to grow and according to a top official of West Indies Power Nevis Ltd. the trend was evident in the number of persons who continued to visit the Spring Hill Nevis1 site and the Upper Jessups Nevis 2 site.

Chief Operations Officer (COO), Head of Drilling Operations of West Indies Power Mr. Bobby Tinsley, made the observation when he spoke with the Department of Information at his Nelson Spring office on August 07, 2008.

“We have seen a lot of people up there [Nevis 2]. Our security guard handles most of the in betweens stuff and the people who want to come see the location. So stop and see the security guard if you are coming up. They will bring you up and show you around the location.

“During Culturama in the last three or four days I guess people were off work we have seen a tremendous amount of people up there asking a lot of questions. What we are doing? When we think it will be online? Where is the plant going? What is the pad for? Why did we dig the pond? Typical questions from the public that have a lot of interest. Their reactions have been very good they are all smiles and are waiting to see the productivity come along,” he said.

The advancement of the young people in St. Kitts and Nevis is critically important in building a just, long lasting and fulfilling society.

So says Prime Minister and Minister of Sport, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas as he accepted two cheques totalling nearly US$400,000 for the development of sporting facilities in Challengers and Half Way Tree from the Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Rong-chuan Wu. US$284,000 is for Half Way Tree and US$115,000 for Challengers.

“All over the world and the Caribbean, including St. Kitts and Nevis, our young people are being challenged. We hear very often of the ills that they may be associated with. We hear very often that they are restless, that they are involved in serious crimes, that maybe enough is not said about them in terms of their true potential that needs to be developed and harnessed in the betterment of their country,” said Dr. Douglas, himself a former sports administrator.

Dr. Douglas said the financing which will see the development of sporting facilities in Half Way Tree and Challengers, will give the young people of both areas “the opportunity to build their sporting skills so that they can use their past time in a very worthwhile way.”

He repeated a comment made at last Saturday’s official opening of Football House, that there is money to be made from sports.

Culture Advisor to the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Mr. Halsted “Sooty” Byron has cited that the introduction of African Drumming in schools was responsible for the heightened interest in drumming and the craze for iron bands among Nevis’ youth.

Mr. Byron told the Department of Information in an interview on June 09, 2008, that when drumming was introduced in primary schools as an initiative of the Department of Culture while he served as Director some years ago, the numbers were slight but there had been a spiked interest in recent times.

“Drumming in schools has caught on. When we started first the numbers were very small but up to when I finished dealing with that aspect of the art form in the schools, I think it was going very great.

“We [Department of Culture now the Nevis Cultural Foundation] have now recruited a young man who is also a member of IAfrikana Drummers Keoma George and the young boys and girls in the schools have really taken to it to the extent where we see these iron bands forming all over Nevis. This is a direct spin off from the drums,” he said.

Mr. Byron explained that it was regrettable that parents and adults did not think that an African drum could not make a perfect gift for a young adult or child.
