Geothermal training is in the works for Nevisians.  This was the good news received when the Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry and his Nevis delegation visited the United Nations University Geothermal Training Programme (UNU-GTP). The Hon. Joseph Parry held talks with the programme directors on his recent trip to Iceland, August 17-20, 2008.

The Nevis delegation included Junior Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Hon. Carlisle Powell, Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ernie Stapleton and Protocol Officer, Miss Angelica Elliott.

The UNU-GTP has operated in Iceland since 1979, with an aim at assisting developing countries with geothermal potential to build up or strengthen groups of specialists in most aspects of geothermal exploration and development.

According to Premier Parry, a number of professional studies in geothermal are available in Iceland and the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led Nevis Island Administration (NIA) is working towards getting interested residents of Nevis, to work towards degrees and certificates in this renewable energy resource to the island.  Presently there are no training courses for persons who do not have a first degree, but the (NIA) will be seeking to have a course of study put in place for those individuals who are interested but do not have a professional degree.

Minister with responsibility for Social Transformation on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel, together with other Cabinet colleagues, were on hand at the Charlestown Pier on July 26, 2008, to welcome the graduates who returned home from a successful three month training programme in Trinidad.

He registered his satisfaction with their performance and that he was anxious to see the difference their training in auto mechanics, plumbing, carpentry, masonry and welding would have on the community.

“We are indeed happy to welcome back our trainees and within a week we expect them to hit the ground running to put their training to good use and we have heard good things about their performance in Trinidad and this underscores another effort on behalf of the people of Nevis by the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) to build up our skills bank and to provide our young people with opportunities for development.

“Your performance tells us that we could send another group of people over there. We thank them and we look forward to feeling the weight of this training and feeling the impact in the community,” he said.

Seventeen students had left Nevis in May for training at Metal Construction Industries Ltd. (MCI) which was sponsored by the NIA. The Minister also used the opportunity to thank all who had supported the programme.

Minister of Social Transformation in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel, in a televised interview on NTV’s Channel 8 on June 04, 2008, spoke of the importance of training on his return from a recent trip to Trinidad, where he met with residents of Nevis who were undergoing skills-training there, courtesy of the NIA.

Minister Daniel said the initiative by the Administration was part of its quest to promote and facilitate personal development of the people of Nevis.

“Education and training represent our first priority, our second priority and our third priority,” he said.

Mr. Daniel highlighted that such development could reap great benefits for the trainees and hoped that others would be encouraged to do the same.

“These young men and women are going to be in a position to become entrepreneurs and that is something that we are pushing as well and they are going to be in a position to raise their self esteem.  When you are trained and you are competent in some area, it raise feelings of self worth and builds your confidence and puts them in a position to be role models for other young people,” Mr. Daniel said.

According to the Minister, the team of 17, which consisted of 16 males and one female, were currently being trained in construction and its allied professions as well as in auto-mechanics.

“In discussions with them, they are very, very happy with the course that is being offered to them.  We have trainees in electrical engineering, training in masonry, carpentry and training in auto-mechanics and plumbing and all of these are critical skills needed to underlay the economic and social development of Nevis,” Minister Daniel said.

May 26, 2008

Education Advisor in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Mrs. Christine Springette appealed to students of the Charlestown Secondary School (CSS) to prepare themselves for the many opportunities that would become available in a developing Nevis.

She gave the advice when she stood in for Premier of Nevis and Minister of Education Hon. Joseph Parry at a celebratory church service on May 23, 2008, at the Charlestown Methodist Church, to mark the school’s 58th anniversary. The event was held under the theme “Augmenting the past to impact the future”.

“Do not sell yourself cheap. You may never have proof of how important you are even now. You are more important than you think and so I am hoping that each students delicate himself or herself to the opportunities which are open to you”¦some of you are passing many subjects but the future that some of you have chosen, is one of delinquency and disobedience and non performance.

“The country is developing and there is going to be great opportunities for jobs and for self employment for entrepreneurship. I am appealing to you to get ready for what is in store or else positions will be filled by persons from abroad because the country must develop and positions must be filled,” she said.

Mrs. Springette who was a former student and Head Mistress of the school congratulated the teachers for their hard work and acknowledged that teaching today was much more difficult  today then in her time.

“I want to congratulate the teachers because I really do believe they try very hard and I don’t try to measure myself with them because when I was a teacher teaching was so much [easier]. There were no drugs, when I left 20 years ago drugs was just creeping into the school system. There was no drinking, there was no great fascination with sex because there is a great fascination with sex “¦and children stood up when teacher entered the classroom,” she said.

Notwithstanding, Mrs. Springette also asked the students to reflect on their contribution to the school and to reflect on the relationships with persons who may have made a difference in their lives but did not take hold of the opportunities they presented.

She said the CSS had served Nevis well and had produced students that had gone on to hold major positions in and out of Nevis. She pointed to Hon. Hugh Rawlins who was recently appointed to serve as Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court.
