The tourism industry is set for an unparalleled period of growth.

That’s according to St. Kitts and Nevis‘ Minister of State for Tourism, Sen. the Hon. Richard “Ricky” Skerrit.

In an exclusive insight for TravelMole – – the online community for the travel and tourism industry ““ Minister Skerrit detailed the strategy of  “˜synching’ – a move away from the previously dominant sugar trade to a sustainable, responsible tourism industry aligned with a more diverse agricultural policy.

“All the developments currently planned for the island  such as Kittitian Hill, Silver Reef and the massive Peninsula plan are all strands in an overall strategy of ensuring luxury, low impact products across the islands,” he said.

“These will help create local jobs, wealth and career paths for many of our citizens.”

Tourism Development Officer in the Ministry of Tourism on Nevis Ms. Nicole Liburd described her participation in the fifth International Tourism Management course in Thailand from May 14th to June 16th 2008, as having been beneficial to Nevis.

She made the comment during an interview with the Department of Information on June 11, 2008 on the heels of her return to Nevis at the end of an international tourism course which was held at the Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus. It was offered locally through the Organization of American States (OAS) by the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TAIC), Foreign Affairs Department of the Government of Thailand. There were 25 participants from 18 countries which included Nevis and Cuba, the only participants from the Northern Hemisphere.

“We were also to do health and medical tourism and it amazed me that we [in Nevis] have a lot more history with regards to health tourism but we have not developed it fully so that might be something we can look at. [With regard to] our tourism policies and our product planning, we must have more cohesive methods for how we check our statistics, visitor arrivals [and] the revenue from tourism and so on.

“It is important for us to now put measures in place to capture this information because it makes the planning of tourism easier, it makes the allocation of funds for tourism easier and these are things a lot of agencies require in order to give us assistance as well. So yes there were a lot of things that I think I can put in place here [in Nevis] and I am encouraged to share with my co workers,” she said.

Minister of State for Tourism, Sen. the Hon. Richard Skerritt says the multi-million dollar Kittitian Hill project is very much alive and is an integral part of the St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Government’s visionary effort to diversify the previous sugar-based economy and improve the quality of life for the residents of the surrounding villages of Newton Ground, St. Paul’s, Dieppe Bay, Parson’s and Saddlers and that wider Whitegate area of St Kitts.

He told Members of Parliament and the public at large on Wednesday that the ongoing attempts by the opposition People’s Action Movement (PAM) which holds one-seat in the 15-memberlaw making body that the sabotage of the Kittitian Hill project through mounting billboards and all of the other propaganda based methods, will fail.

Minister Skerritt accused the People’s Action Movement (PAM) of spreading propaganda designed to create an attitude and atmosphere of doom and gloom in the country and to attack the integrity of the Government’s hard work and outstanding achievements in the transformation and development of the economy.

Minister Skerritt noted that over the past few days, agents of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) have been mounting a number of large billboards all over the St. Kitts landscape.

“Mr. Speaker, I will not waste the time of this Honourable Assembly by repeating what we all already see and know”¦.that it is the well established motive and policy of the People’s Action Movement to attempt to destroy the economy of our country as long as they do not hold the reins of government”¦. And it is clear to me that these PAM political billboards are part of PAM’s desperate attack on the exceptionally high level of investor confidence and positive buzz that has been generated in the North American and United Kingdom marketplaces about the future of our tourism sector,” Minister Skerritt told the National Assembly.

St. Kitts and Nevis which closed its three hundred year-old sugar industry three years ago is reporting success in the implementation of strategies to transform the national economy.

Political Leader of the governing St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas told hundreds of Labour Party members and supporters, representatives of the diplomatic corps and business community at his party’s 76th Annual National Conference, that the success of the strategy is quite evident in the economic, social and physical infrastructure, which has been dramatically overhauled and expanded and which has acted as a magnet for foreign direct investment.

Indentifying the various projects aimed at unleashing high-end tourism services, the St. Kitts and Nevis leader referred to the strides in other areas such as financial, information and communication technology and offshore education services, which he said are already delivering substantial social and economic benefits to the people of the federation.

“Our roads and bridges are now among the best in the Caribbean region despite the recent setback. Our telecommunications services are the state-of-the-art and are now much more affordable and competitive and local ownership is now shared because of the new legislative and institutional framework that we have established,” said Dr. Douglas, in his address at the St. Kitts Marriott and Royal Beach Casino.
