Nevis Island Holds Statistics Symposium

The Department of Statistics and Economic Planning saw it first ever Statistics Symposium came to fruition on April 1, 2008 under the theme, “The Quality of the Data that we collect today can affect the quality of your life tomorrow.”
 
Minister responsible for Statistics and Economic Planning in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) the Hon. Premier Joseph Parry in his keynote presentation made at the Opening Ceremony, underscored the importance of statistics which would enable effective implementation of Government policies. Premier Parry further added that awareness for quality data must also be demonstrated by the various government Departments.
 
“Awareness must begin with all of the Government Departments, Tourism, Agriculture, Immigration, Customs and Education. I Hope what I have addressed will be the needs and the effectiveness of the dept. I suspected the work of the department would be done and must have priority even if the level of awareness was low, the Department of Statistics and Economic Planning must function effectively,” he said

Australia Name Cricket Teams For West Indies Tour

Australia have named a revamped Test squad and a 14-man team for the five one-day internationals during the upcoming tour of the West Indies, which includes two One-Day International games at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium.

The Australians have recalled batsman Simon Katich and including two spin bowlers.

Veteran leg spinner Stuart MacGill and left-arm spinner Beau Casson are among 15 players selected in the squad for the three-Test series, while Michael Clarke was named vice-captain after the retirement of Adam Gilchrist.

The 14-man squad for the five one-day internationals against the West Indies includes batsman Michael Hussey’s younger brother David for the first time.

According to the Times On-Line, Andrew Hilditch, chair of national selectors, said 26-year-old Clarke would be vice-captain to Ricky Ponting for both squads after he demonstrated his leadership credentials during the summer.

Clarke, who recently rejected the opportunity to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League to spend more time with his ill father, captained the Australian Twenty20 side to victory over India in February.

St. Kitts – Nevis Police Train In Counter-Terrorism

More professional training for law enforcement officers in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Senior officers from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force and Customs and Excise Department are in Jamaica to participate in a one-week counter-terrorism course.

Inspector Franklyn Belgrove of the St. Kitts Division and Sergeant Alanzo Carty of the Nevis Division of the Police Force and Desroy Daniel, Senior Customs Officer, Enforcement Division, are among participants from six Caribbean countries participating in the March 31st  to April 4th course.

The course organised by Jamaica’s Justice Training Institute in partnership with the Commonwealth Secretariat covers intelligence-gathering and use, investigating and financing terrorism, co-ordinating with border control agencies, international co-operation and other related subjects.
