IOC President Assured Of St. Kitts – Nevis’ Stand Against Doping

President of the International Olympic Association (IOC) Dr. Jacques Rogge was assured of the firm position of St. Kitts and Nevis against doping in sports when he visited the Federation on the weekend.

This assurance was given during a meeting at Government Headquarters when Prime Minister Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas presented President Rogge with a copy of the Instrument of Ratification by the St. Kitts and Nevis Government to the UNESCO International Convention Against Doping in Sports. The original document was signed in February by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and forwarded to the relevant body.

The Prime Minister noted that the Government and people were proud to welcome the IOC President on his inaugural visit and explained that the visit should serve as inspiration to athletes contesting the March 21 to 24 CARIFTA Games slated for Bird Rock.

Collins Wins First Indoor Medal For St. Kitts – Nevis

Minister of State responsible for Sport Hon. Richard Skerritt has congratulated local sprint star Kim Collins for winning his first indoor medal; a feat which local athletic officials says is unprecedented for a St. Kitts and Nevis athlete competing in an international event.

Collins, clocked an official time of 6.54 seconds in the 60 meter final of the World Indoor Championships in Valencia. The time earned him a share for second place along with British sprinter Dwain Chambers.

Minister Skerritt told SKNIS that he was delighted when he heard the news. He said that the Government and people of the twin-island Federation are proud of Collins for exhibiting the grit and determination typical of locals when they are chasing goals. This hinted at the injuries that sidelined the sprinter for many events in the past two years.

Nevis To Host World-Class Triathlon

Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club and the island of Nevis are gearing up for the 6th Annual Olympic Triathlon. The event, known as the Carino Health Spa Triathlon, will be held on March 16, 2008; This year is very special, as athletes are gearing up for the Beijing Olympics, the Nevis triathlon has been sanctioned by the world Governing body (ITU) as a Continental Cup event. This means that male and female elite athletes competing will be able to gain valuable points directly applicable to their Olympic campaigns, and puts Nevis on the world map of triathlons.

Most recently Triathlete Magazine has within the last month given invaluable endorsements to the Federation’s most international annual sporting event. Of the thousands of triathlons world wide, Triathlete Magazine named the Nevis triathlon among its top five “Must-Do Races for 2008”.  The same magazine also published a story and photographs in its Feb. 2008 issue about the 2007 race as the centre page spread.
