St. Kitts – Nevis To Setup Financial Action Task Force

St. Kitts and Nevis, which undergoes its second mutual assessment by the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) in September, has reconvened meetings of the Local Financial Task Force.

The Federation’s Financial Secretary, Mrs. Janet Harris said the assessment will be carried out in September this year and the local committee has been mandated to analyze and review the Federation’s legal, regulatory and enforcement frameworks where Anti-Money Laundering “AML” and the Counter Financing of Terrorism “CFT” are concerned.

The Task Force was first established to address deficiencies within the Federation’s AML/CFT regime, which led to its black listing.  This body is comprised of key officials in the Federal Government and the Nevis Island Administration, whose departments play a major role in detecting and deterring money laundering and terrorist financing.

Dividend Miles program changes:

Deputy Premier of Nevis and Minister of Sports, Hon. Hensley Daniel will be in Antigua to show support to the Nevis Island Pro Team once again, as they rally against Jamaica at the Stanford 20/20 Cricket match on Saturday, February 16th, 2008.

Accompanying the Deputy Premier will be Junior Minister in the Nevis Island Administration, Hon. Carlisle Powell. The Premier has long felt that we should be honouring our Nevisian heroes who have also been our ambassadors for the island of Nevis, at the same time showcasing Nevis’ cricketing history throughout the Caribbean and the rest of the world.

The Premier has invited the following former test players to accompany the Minister of Sports to show support for the Nevis Team: Elquemedo Willett, Keith Arthurton, Carly Tuckett and one of our greatest Cricketing heroes from Nevis, Mr. Livingston Sargeant.

Nevis Redoubles Its Efforts to Maintain International Environmental Standards

The Nevis Island Administration led by the Nevis Reformation Party has been promoting the “green” standard for quite some time. As the island’s economy grows along with a booming tourist industry, the government and private businesses have encouraged a responsible approach to the environment which is beginning to produce very positive results.

Among the initiatives taken is a policy on Nevis to construct no building higher than the tallest palm tree.  You’ll find no soaring skyscrapers obscuring the beautiful views on Nevis. Building height restrictions allow only two story construction throughout the island.

Strict environmental impact assessments apply to all building projects on the island whether commercial or residential.  Low density development combined with quality control takes precedence over massive mega-resort complexes.  Construction practices that incorporate natural, sustainable materials and designs which integrate energy and water saving technologies are encouraged. One hotel on Nevis, the Oualie Beach Hotel, has already achieved Green Globe accreditation.
