Premier Parry Speaking At March

Premier Parry Speaking At March

Charlestown, Nevis
June 17, 2008

Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry and his Deputy Hon. Hensley Daniel hailed the Wesleyan Holiness Church in St. Kitts and Nevis for their efforts to out to the youths in a move to make future model citizens of them. Their commendations came during the launch of the Christian Life Club (CLC) on June 14, 2008 at the Memorial Square in Charlestown.

“I believe I have reason to be optimistic and I have reason for hope because people in government, in the field of religion, in society as a whole have now begun to rally to save our young people and to save our country and this is a good sign.

“So I want to commend the church on its 100th anniversary, the church for its consciousness and for its efforts to do something about the situation in Nevis and on St. Kitts. I want to commend all of us who are not only aware and conscious of what is going wrong but for taking action and for taking action now. Now is the time for action, now is the time for all of us in all walks of life to make sure that we jump in, get into action and save our country. I would say down with guns, down with drugs, down with poor behaviour down with gangs,” Mr. Parry said.

The Club is a church programme in a club type ministry for children aged 4-12 which is focused on Jesus. It has been rooted in scripture, emphasised salvation and prioritized discipleship. The excellence orientated ministry was designed to bring children to Christ and to disciple them at four levels: Trackers for children ages 4-5, Pathfinders from Grade 1-2, Trailblazers from Grades 3-4 and Pacesetters from Grades 5-6.

Mr. Daniel urged adults to volunteer their time to guide young people through to their adolescent years and beyond since many had gone of course once they attained the age of 12.

SKN Sponsors Resolution On Crime At OAS Assembly

Orginazation of American States

Orginazation of American States Assembly

Basseterre, Saint Kitts – Nevis
June 09, 2008 (CUOPM)

St. Kitts and Nevis has sponsored a resolution on crime and violence at the just concluded General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in Medellin, Colombia.

The resolution, which was co-sponsored by the CARICOM States and supported by all member states of the Western Hemispheric body, places the issue of Crime and Violence squarely on the agenda of the OAS, which has now resolved to take certain actions with regard to this escalating phenomenon that, is negatively impacting the quality of life in all member states.

The Resolution, presented by St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, recognises the implications of crime and violence for the social, economic and political development of member states and, while being fully aware of the necessity for a criminal justice-focused approach in particular circumstances, cautions against an over-reliance on this approach, advocating instead a preventive public health approach in conjunction with citizen security strategies.

The public health approach, it is understood, does not replace criminal justice and human rights responses to violence but rather complements their activities and offers them additional tools and sources of collaboration.

The General Secretariat of the OAS has been mandated to support initiatives by member states, in actions aimed at preventing and comprehensively addressing the phenomenon of violence in its diverse forms and to keep the Committee on Hemispheric Security, which has oversight on such issues, informed on all ongoing and planned related activities.

Nevis Government Calls For Crackdown On Youth Crime

Charlestown Nevis
April 3, 2008

The month of April has been designated youth month on Nevis and Minister of Youth Development, the Hon. Hensley Daniel issued a call to help young people to turn away from crime, violence, and drug abuse. The minister made the call while he delivered a televised address on Tuesday, April 1st to officially launch activities to celebrate youth month 2008.

He said these social-ills had a negative impact on the young and collectively Nevisians must move to reduce these incidences and noted that Youth Month afforded the opportunity to call into question, or reflect on what had been done to promote and sustain youth development.

“I want to use the occasion of Youth Month to enlist the support of the  family, the school, the church and the community in helping to sustain the Judeo-Christian values on which our society is founded.  The values are coming under threat ““ the values of discipline, hard-work and honesty.  I call upon the adults in the society to hold on to these values so that today’s young can lead by example.

“The adults must help to harness the energies of the young and channel them into productive pursuits. We have to maintain our moral and ethical standards to serve as a frame of reference for our young people.  The advancement of Nevis depends less on its ability to provide economic benefits and more on its moral and spiritual values,” he said.
