Good News For Climate Change In The Caribbean
Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis has underscored the importance of climate change.
Prime Minister and Minister of Sustainable Development, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas on Monday joined other Heads of Government of the Small Islands Developing States in the Summit of the Alliance on Small Island Developing States in New York.
In his intervention Prime Minister Douglas noted the importance of the Summit as it provided the forum for that allowed the Heads to be briefed on the issues surrounding the negotiations.
Climate Change urged that the leaders must remain vigilant and focussed in being cognizant of the fact that there will be those who will try to bring disunity among the membership to weaken a commitment to the process and the goals and objectives in achieving the targets from Copenhagen.
These include global emissions reduction targets that will ensure greenhouse gases emissions peak by 2015, mobilization of financing for adaptation, technology transfer and capacity building in small Small Island Developing States (SIDS), compensation for the risk and losses resulting from climate change and agreeing that the legally binding multilateral framework of the UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocal is sustained and strengthened.
Hon Prime Minister Douglas underscored the importance of the upcoming Copenhagen Summit and will be part of the round table session with other heads of the international community on Tuesday when policy statements on the core political issues for a successful outcome will be made when the UN Summit in Climate Change convenes.
