St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Thursday that the governing St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party “is run along strong democratic principles.”
“I continue to make the point that we are living in a democracy. The St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party is run along strong democratic principles. Those who have difficulties, they are free to speak out. Those who wish the leadership of the party to be examined, there is a process to be followed. The party constitution speaks of that process…a resolution can be brought to the national executive. The national executive of the party will always, I am sure, take wisdom from the resolution if it is passed…” Dr. Douglas said in an exclusive interview with SKNVIBES surrounded by scores of persons who greeted, hugged and kissed him on his arrival to work on Thursday afternoon.
Prime Minister Douglas was responding to a call on Wednesday by former cabinet minister, Hon. Dwyer Astaphan for him to either step down or resign.
“The constitution speaks to…how the Prime Minister is appointed. If there are those who have a problem with the Prime Minister, they just simply come together, they go to the Governor General, indicate who they have maximum support for and the Governor General will in turn, I am sure he will call me, as is expected from the Constitution…I think it will be two or three days will be given to me to make a decision…that is to step down or to call a general elections by dissolve of the house. I don’t intend to do that at all,” said Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Douglas thanked his supporters for their loyalty and words of encouragement after which he went about his usual business.
