The St. Kitts – Nevis government continues to protect the poor and vulnerable and to control the cost of living at this time of global financial crisis.
At Monday’s routine Cabinet Meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, a decision was taken to continue to subsidise the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or cooking gas.
“Therefore, the current prices will remain unchanged. In St. Kitts, the price of a 100lb cylinder of LPG is EC$140 and the price for the 20lb cylinder is EC$30,” said Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty.
Since the start of the New Year, the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP)-led Nevis reduced the prices of the two cylinder sizes from EC$160 and EC$40 respectively to EC$120 and EC$30.
At present, the Federal Government is subsidising the price of the 100lb cylinder by $64.51, and the price of the 20lb cylinder by $13.23. At the end of 2008, the levels of subsidy had risen sharply over the previous year, 2007, when the levels of subsidy for the two cylinder sizes had been $29.79 and $5.29 respectively.
