There is need for closer monitoring of the prices of certain goods to reduce the high cost of goods in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty noted that the St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party Government which created a basket of essential goods from which import taxes have been removed, continue to monitor the issue of price control.

“Government is pleased to report that the prices of a significant number of essential goods have decreased significantly and remained stable over the last few months. However, it is agreed that there is need for even closer monitoring, particularly as it relates to certain goods,” said Minister Carty in a post Cabinet Briefing.

He disclosed that government is committed to continue to work with bakers and other suppliers to keep the price of bread, milk and other essential products as low as possible in the current environment.

Government said the capping of the fuel surcharge to a maximum of 50 percent of the basic charge for electricity has brought significant relief to consumers over the last 12 months and reiterates its commitment to not only shield consumers from high prices of electricity, but to also implement renewable energy solutions such as wind and geothermal energy to end dependency on expensive fossil fuel.
