The Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture is looking forward to strengthening the close partnerships established with the local Olympic Committee and the Athletic Association.
A letter sent to the leadership of the two organizations stressed this while commending the national team that represented the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
“On behalf of the Hon. Prime Minister, the Minister of State of Sports and the Government and people of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Ministry would also like to congratulate Kim Collins who established a national precedence by advancing to his second finals in consecutive [Summer] Olympic Games,” the communiqué said. “The naming of the Kim Collins Pavilion in the newly built Silver Jubilee Athletic Stadium is living testimony to the high esteem in which Collins, who qualified for the semi-finals in the 100 meter and the finals of the 200 meter in Beijing, is regarded. “¦ Our best wishes also to Tiandra Ponteen, Virgil Hodge and Meritzer Williams.”
Congratulations were also expressed to the coaching staff and administrators of the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) and the St. Kitts and Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) for their dedication as well as to the sponsors, particularly Addidas, which sponsored the athletes outfit.
The sporting bodies were also encouraged to examine the need to establish clear guidelines for national athletes as they prepare to participate in major regional and international events. The inclusion of athletes in this process was suggested.
The letter reiterated the desire to continue working with the SKNOC and SKNAAA “to develop national athletic programmes including the management and maintenance of sporting facilities.”
