asseterre, St. Kitts (July 11, 2007):
A weekend benefit concert aboard the cruise ship Freewinds was the latest activity in the Special Olympics’ “Road to Shanghai, China” campaign.
A packed house rocked to the music of Dominican vocalist Michele Henderson as she belted out hits from past albums. Henderson was accompanied by the Freewinds Band, which also provided entertaining performances for the audience.
National Director of Special Olympics Clarice Cotton told SKNIS that she is grateful for the continued support shown by various agencies and individuals.
Referring to the concert on Saturday, Ms Cotton expressed gratitude to the Captain and crew of the Freewinds for hosting the concert and providing the entertainment. She also thanked the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and Culture, which organized the benefit show, for its continued support.
s. Cotton explained that the concert was organized by the Freewinds due to a request from the Minister of State for Sports Hon. Richard Skerritt. The ship has a history of supporting Special Olympics worldwide and was eager to stage the event.
“Minister Skerritt is a great friend of Special Olympics,” she explained. “His continued support on a personal and professional level is comforting and we are glad to have him on our side.”
The national director stated that additional activities are planned, but the organization is still a long way off from the $120.000.00 target needed to participate at the 2007 World Games. She issued an appeal for community members to support the local body.
A tag drive is scheduled to begin shortly in various communities to raise additional funds.
