The Female Relay `Team and the Under-19 Netball Squad came in for high praise on Tuesday from the Federation’s Prime Minister and Minister of Sports, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
Virgil Hodge Tameka Williams, Meritzer Williams and Tanika Liburd set a new national record in the 4 X 100 metres relay clocking 43.53 seconds to win gold at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Cuba. The “Golden Girls” beat Colombia into second place and Trinidad and Tobago into third place.
The St. Kitts National Team won the OECS Under-23 Netball Championship in Nevis. The Kittitian lasses defeated the Grenada spice girls in the final, 57 ““ 54.
“I want to congratulate the St. Kitts Under-23 Netball Team for winning the Championship in Nevis over the weekend,” said Prime Minister Douglas during his weekly radio call in programme “Ask the Prime Minister” on Tuesday.
Dr. Douglas also recognised and congratulated Avonell Julian; Mechelle Liburd, the Team Captain; Coach Jill Musgrave-Archibald and Talissa Brown, the Vice Captain, who was singled out for her exceptional ability and performance and named the MVP of the tournament and Best Defensive Player.
Teams from Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla, St. Lucia and Dominica participated.
“Our young people are performing and I would like to congratulate our young ladies for winning gold at the recent CAC Games in Cuba. Hats off to our young people once again. They cannot stop our young people,” said the Prime Minister.
Dr. Douglas also extended congratulations to Akeem Saunders, Akheam Fox and Tashmael Mills on their selection to the Leeward Islands Cricket Association Under-19 squad.
