Nevis Gears Up For Upcoming Bi-Elections

The Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led Nevis Island Administration is very hopeful of gaining two of the three Federal seats for Nevis, in the upcoming bi”“election to be held today, Monday, August 27, 2007. The Hon. Joseph Parry said the win will consolidate the party’s position in the Federal Parliament, thus allowing Nevis to attain greater autonomy.
 
The seat was made vacant by the sudden passing of the Hon. Malcolm Guishard on June 11, 2007. The deceased Mr. Guishard held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the St.Kitts – Nevis Federal Assembly.

Nevis Government Praises Small Businesses

Minister with responsibility for Culture and Trade on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel lauded the efforts of a number of small business operators who seized the opportunities provided by the recently concluded Culturama Festival to generate added revenue.
 
The Minister made the comment on Saturday August 18th at the Cultural Village during prize giving ceremony to winners of the 2007 Cultural Festival.
 
He said the 2007 cultural festivity from July 27th to August 7th had recorded a greater than usual number of small business operators involved in the sale of food and drinks and he urged them to work closely with the Nevis Island Administration so that more opportunities would be provided for bigger profit margins.

St. Kitts – Nevis Folklore Group Wins Award

A local folklore group has done St. Kitts and Nevis proud earning the title of “Best Visiting Troupe” at the August 02 to 12 Carnival in Anguilla.

Sylvester’s Masquerade won the trophy in this category for its exciting presentations and professional work ethic at various functions. Founder Sylvester Huggins told SKNIS, that his group has been performing for ten years in and outside of the Federation. He said winning this award was extremely gratifying.

Huggins noted that there are 12 performing members in his folklore group. He explained that his group has a bright future as some of the dancers are fairly young.

Kareem Mitchum the troupe’s Captain is one such person. The 17-year-old started performing at the age of five. He revealed that his interest in the art form developed after seeing a local group perform during Carnival. He subsequently spoke to the owner, who he affectionately called “Brother Eddy” and asked him to teach him how to “Dance the Masquerade.”
