Junior Minister with responsibility for Communications, Works, Public Utilities, Physical Planning, Posts, Natural Resources and Environment in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Carlisle Powell, impressed on a team of U13 cricketers the importance of education in their quest to attain supremacy in the sport.

Mr. Powell, a former cricket administrator and an avid cricket fan, spoke to a group of budding cricketers at Grove Park on Friday May 23, 2008, ahead of a practice session with their coach Mr. Ronald Powell, at a programme entitled “Helping our boys grow gracefully” which was designed to assist the youths simultaneously in their cricket and personal development.

“You are not here just for your cricket you are here because we want to help you with your education as well”¦

“I want to say to you that there are schools all over the world where they are offering scholarships especially for sport in schools but you are not going to get a scholarship easily, if your education is not of a certain level. They will not take you because you are an excellent cricketer but you can’t read, write and comprehend. They will not want you in the school because you will not pass and in the final analysis, you might be a good sportsman but if you don’t pass the subjects, you will be helping the school to fail you will not help their academic pass rate,” he said.

Mr. Powell pointed to his son Mr. Kieron Powell as one who had benefited from a sports scholarship to study in England who had since been selected as a member of the West Indies U-19 World Cup 2008 squad.

“My younger son Kieron Powell who most of you would know or would have seen play cricket, he went to school in England for two years and he got a [part] scholarship to go to school in England”¦any one of you would love to go to school in England,” he said.

The Minister urged the participants to be smart in their school work and to pay attention to their teachers.

Day Tripping On The Island Of Nevis

Day Trips To Nevis From St. Kitts

Day Trips To Nevis From St. Kitts

Day Tripping To St. Kitts’ Sister Island – Nevis
By: Justin Burch

Resting only a few miles apart in calm Caribbean waters, St. Kitts and Nevis have always shared an intimate relationship. Today, that relationship finds St. Kitts as one of the Caribbean’s premier travel destinations, while the smaller island of Nevis offers plenty of great activities for day tripping tourists. Though St. Kitts remains a superior resort destination with more tourist opportunities, the islands have much in common. For starters, both islands feature dormant volcanoes at their center, each surrounded by lush rainforests with miles of hiking trails. Furthermore, as St. Kitts and Nevis represent former colonial outposts with economies once dominated by successful sugar plantations, both islands possess an incredible array of historic architecture. Lastly, as most visitors to the Caribbean take great interest in the beaches and the recreation opportunities provided by the Caribbean Sea, tourists will find plenty of warm, clear water and powdery sand wherever they travel.

Rising over 3,200 feet above the Caribbean Sea, Nevis Peak dominates the landscape of St. Kitts’ sister island. Similar to Mt. Liamuiga at the center of St. Kitts, Nevis Peak is surrounded by lush trail-filled rainforests and diverse plant and animal life. As a result, hiking and biking in the shadow of Nevis’ dormant volcano are two of the most popular activities for day-tripping tourists. With tours available for every age and skill level, visitors can spend a few hours experiencing the unspoiled beauty of Nevis and learning about her vibrant Caribbean ecosystem.

Scuba divers and snorkelers will also want to spend an afternoon on Nevis, enjoying pristine coral reefs and ship wrecks. As only 2 miles of Caribbean waters separate St. Kitts and Nevis, many of the best diving tours visit the most popular sites surrounding both islands. Many of the other water sports popular on St. Kitts can also be found on Nevis. A number of tour operators cater to deep sea fishermen and wind surfing enthusiasts, with many offering lessons for those new to the adventurous pursuits. After spending some time in the water, many day-trippers spend their afternoons relaxing on Pinneys Beach ““ one of the Caribbean’s most beloved stretches of sand.

Premier Parry Speaks To Nevis Citizens

Premier Parry of Nevis

Nevis Pemier – Joesph Parry

Charlestown, Nevis
May 27, 2008

As part of the Nevis Reformation Party led Nevis Island Administration”˜s (NIA) pledge of transparency, Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry gave a report on the activities commencing May 19th 2008 ,at the studio of Nevis Television  (NTV) on Monday, May 26th, 2008.

Presently Nevis is experiencing a six-week drought. The Nevis Island Administration is proposing a number of measures to be taken to replenish the island with quality water.

“We have had a program of well-drilling around the island and I am happy to report that several small wells and one major well in the area of Maddens Estate will produce over three hundred gallons of water a minute. We (NIA) have been told by Bedrock Exploration and Development Technologies (BEAD) that a pump is under construction and will be connected to the system by Mid June,” said Premier Parry.

To assist the water Department, the general public is being encouraged to be prudent with their use of water.  Necessary precautions for water conservation, such as limiting the frequency of washing cars and watering plants, are being echoed.  Residents are also implored to listen to the radio for updates on any disruptions in the water schedule for given areas.

“In the next four weeks the water problem will be resolved and if the drought continues water will still be available,” said Premier Parry.

On the subject of geothermal energy, Premier Parry said that he was informed by West Indies Power that the first well in the Springhill area is a productive well and has the capacity to provide 34 megawatts of power.  That plant will be able to supply an abundance of electricity that will be cheaper, and will significantly impact the cost of living in Nevis.

During the course of the report Premier Parry apprised listeners on development of the AMMAN hotel, a hotel chain that operates out of Asia with the highest reputation of upscale accommodations for the high-end clients. “The chief architecture came to Nevis and they are very excited about the prospects here in Nevis,” he explained.

Mr. Simon Lowe of AMMAN Development visited Nevis and stated that the area in Hanley’s Road, Gingerland is an improved site. “We are at a stage now where the architects have gone to work. Documents must be drawn up and later this year. The country will be in a position to calculate the time period when the hotel will start,” articulated the Premier.

Basseterre, Saint Kitts – Nevis
May 27, 2008 (CUOPM)

Former female sugar workers have been praised for purchasing government shares in Cable and Wireless (St. Kitts and Nevis) Limited and investing in Treasury Bills.

Addressing women attending a Labour Women Conference at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort last Saturday, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas challenged the women to mould their children into productive citizens in the twin-island Federation.

Dr. Douglas, who is also the National Political Leader of the governing St. Kitts – Nevis Labour Party said scores of women in the Federation were recently challenged by the closure of the centuries-old sugar industry and are now active participants in the creation and expansion of the new economy.

He said former sugar workers have now become small crop, vegetable and livestock farmers and owners of small businesses.

Dr. Douglas praised those women who rejected the advice of the current political leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM) Mr. Lindsay Grant, who told them not to let the Labour Administration tell them how to spend their redundancy money from the closure of the sugar industry.
