Junior Minister of Trade and Industry, Import and Export and Consumer Affairs in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Dwight Cozier, appealed to members of the public to treat the Supply Office in the Department of Trade on Nevis as a charitable institution and one which worked in the interest of the people of Nevis.

The Minister flanked by his Permanent Secretary Mr. Dwight Morton, Director of Trade Mr. Jermaine D. Stapleton and Business Development Officer Mr. Patrice Wilkin, made the comment during a press conference on August 20, 2008, at the Ministry’s conference room on Government Road. The conference was called to inform consumers of the status of a number of basic food items on the island.

“We hasten to add, however, that the sole purpose of the Department of Trade is to subsidise certain products to the people of Nevis at preferential prices. Nothing at the Department of Trade has any duties or any Custom service charge or any Consumption Tax on the prices of these products. Therefore, all the products that are supplied through the Nevis Supply Office Department of Trade, are supplied under government subside.

“We want to, therefore, appeal to the general public to understand the implications of this and to therefore treat the Department of Trade as an institution that is charitable and therefore working in the interest of the people of Nevis,” he said.

During the Press conference which followed on the heels of earlier meetings with the Nevis Chapter of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce and a group of Bakers on the island, the Minister pointed to the availability of flour, sugar, rice and milk and also on horse feed.

PM Manning Desires OECS Economic Membership

PM Patrick Manning

Trinidad and Tobago PM – Patrick Manning

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
August 21, 2008 (CUOPM)

Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Hon. Patrick Manning said here Wednesday that his twin-island republic desires to become part of an economic union with the member countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) by 2011.

The Prime Ministers of St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada; the Foreign Ministers of Guyana and Barbados and the Secretary General of CARICOM and the Director General of the OECS met last week in Port of Spain with Prime Minister Manning to discuss the new thrust towards economic and political integration.

Prime Minister Manning and Grenada Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas were in Basseterre to sell the idea of a new economic union to St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

“It is a coalition of the willing. What was missing over so many years, we believe, was the political will. The desire was there. The political will was much more difficult to muster. But on this occasion that is what we started to do.  That is why we made the commitment to bring to economic union by 2015. These are the times we have set and we are committed to work towards achieving those goals, it is a coalition of the willing. A big difference,” Prime Minister Manning told reporters following discussions with St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas at the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel and Royal Beach Casino.

“This arrangement in no way prejudices the OECS arrangement. In fact is preserves it. By going to the economic union first, the OECS is preserved and in doing that, we are also advancing the CARICOM agenda ““ going to a single economy in CARICOM by 2015,” said Manning.

Nevis Is Looking For More High Tech Mechanics

NASPA Chairman - Lauri Lawrence

NASPA Chairman – Lauri Lawrence
Charlestown, Nevis
August 20, 2008

Chairman of the Nevis Air and Sea Ports Authority (NASPA) Board Mr. Laurie Lawrence, told a gathering of officials from the Nevis Island Administration (NIA), NASPA staff and members of the public, that the breakdown of the only fire tender at the airport on Nevis in January highlighted a major weakness at the airport and by extension the island.

He said at a recent ceremony to commission a new fire tender that the incident which had forced civil aviation officials to down grade the airport to a level three, was a source of major inconvenience to the traveling public and had highlighted a dearth of skills on Nevis in the diagnosis and maintenance of sophisticated mechanical equipment.

“I would like to encourage some of our young students who are academically inclined to consider pursuing advanced studies in the technical areas such as mechanics, engineering and electricity,” he said.

Mr. Lawrence also encouraged the NIA to place more emphasis on the provision of training in the technical areas which he pointed to. He said large sums were spent on training in the traditional areas of business, law, accounting and finance and not enough on the critical technical and vocational areas that were urgently needed on Nevis.
