Social Development Minister on Nevis Hon. Hensley Daniel said the number of social initiatives put in place by the sitting Nevis Island Administration (NIA) were meant to develop the island’s people and serve as a yardstick to indicate the seriousness of the government.

In a recent interview with the Department of Information while on a tour of the St. John’s Parish, Mr. Daniel pointed to the community-based projects which targeted the senior citizens, training programmes for younger persons and educational programmes for primary school children.

“I want to say to the people, this is our way of saying that we are serious about government. This is our way of saying to you, that you can depend on us to deal with the critical matters in the community and I look forward to your continued support as we stride to continue the development,” he said.

Mr. Daniel who is also Deputy Premier of Nevis, the area representative for the Parish and a member of the St. Johns Community Improvement Committee (SJCIC), a long standing non profit community club pointed to major construction works that the NIA had undertaken in the area among them the village roads and a new play field at The Flats in Cole Hill.

“I think the people in this area would be happy with the government since we opened the new school, we have started the Hot Meals Programme for the children here at the St. Johns Primary School and now we are providing them with a field.

“We came here as members of the St. Johns Community Improvement Club in 1985 and erected a community centre right next to the school and 24 years after, we are back with a new school, new playing field, lunch programmes, computer programmes, homework assistance programmes. All of those are intended to move the people of this community in the forward march,” he said.
