Prime Minister Douglas Addresses Health Issues

Charlestown, Nevis (July 17, 2007)

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis the Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas believes that the challenge to effectively address chronic non-communicable and communicable diseases, hinged on the capability of health systems and institutions to deliver sustainable required care and services, in line with accepted standards in the health profession.
 
Dr. Douglas who is also the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) lead spokesperson on Health (including HIV/AIDS) and Human Resource Development, made the comment on Monday July 16, 2007, at the start of the week long Inaugural Eastern Caribbean Conference on Health at the Four Seasons Resort on Nevis. The Conference’s theme is “Cooperating to Build Healthier Communities”.
 
He said a special CARICOM Summit for Caribbean Heads of Government (CHG) was planned for Trinidad and Tobago in September. The Summit would allow the Caribbean’s political leadership to formulate a regional strategic plan to be used in the fight against non communicable diseases.

Policy Dialogue On Tourist Safety And Security Successful

Manager at the Hotel and Tourism Association Michael Head returned from a recently held policy dialogue on Tourist Safety and Security in the greater Caribbean, pleased that effective strategies had been defined for improved visitor security.

The Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA) collaborated to host the 3-day event geared at establishing a regional network.

Items on the agenda included: Regional Tourist Safety and Security Initiatives; The Multi-Dimensions of Tourist Safety; Enhancing Tourist Safety Through Technology; Establishing Tourist Safety Through Technology ““Wireless CCTV and Establishing National Networks and Action Plans for Tourist Safety.

Nevis Minister Applauds Nevis Health Policy

Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration the Hon Hensley Daniel hailed Nevis’ health policy which is directed at prevention while he delivered an address at the opening ceremony of the Inaugural Eastern Caribbean Conference on Health, hosted by the NIA in collaboration with other stakeholders in health on Monday July 16, 2007, under the theme “Cooperating to build Healthier Communities”.
 
The Health Minister said the Administration had focussed on public education and community outreach programmes, which would help the society to make health a priority and make careful dieting and exercise part of its daily routine.
 
Mr. Daniel welcomed the week long conference which, he said, came at a time of great challenge and opportunity.
 
“The great challenge relates to the relatively high incidence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension then there is obesity and HIV/AIDS, low levels of health insurance, natural disasters and rising health care costs occasioned by antisocial behaviour such as drug abuse and violence.
