Nevis’ Housing Policy Tied To Social Transformation

Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for Social Transformation in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Hensley Daniel, said the island’s Housing Policy was a key component in the social transformation thrust initiated by the Nevis Reformation Party led Administration, since it took office just over one year ago.
 
He made the comment recently, when he delivered the feature address to mark the official launch of the Golden Grove Housing Community at Brown Hill Village, St. Johns Parish by the Nevis Housing and Lands Development Corporation. The project, which targeted single mothers and young women, came completed with utilities.
 
Mr. Daniel, who is also the Area Representative, said housing was a critical component to social stability and people who owned houses were likely to react differently to development than non home owners.

Nevis Premier Visits North America

Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry led a delegation to Toronto, Canada on Friday, August 10th, and New York on Saturday, August 11th, 2007 in order to report on the accomplishments of the first year of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) in office.  Premier Parry was accompanied by the Hon. Hensley Daniel- Deputy Premier, Junior Minister – the Hon. Carlisle Powell and Advisor to the Premier Mr. Llewellyn Parris.

The Hon. Joseph Parry opened both meetings in Toronto and New York with a moment of silence in honour of former teacher and headmistress Mrs. Rosalie Andre, who passed away on Tuesday 7th August, 2007. “Mrs. Andre was a very good friend of mine, we have had our fallouts but we have always gotten back together and maintained a great amount of mutual respect for each another”, said Mr. Parry. He went on to say, “While at Gingerland High School, Mrs. André was a headmistress who was extremely instrumental in the growth and development of that high school during her tenure there.”     

Mr. Parry said this trip to North America will take place at least once a year so that Nevisian Nationals and friends of Nevis living abroad can be abreast of the happenings of the government and the island of Nevis. Premier Parry’s report was accompanied by a collective, well organised power point presentation that contained text and pictures of the undertakings of the NRP led Nevis Island Administration over the past year.

TDC Takes In EC $12 Million In Profit For 2006

The St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Trading and Development Company (TDC) Group of Companies is reporting a pre-tax profit of EC$11.7 million in 2006, compared to EC$11.5 million the previous year.

The pre-tax profit of EC$11,700,510 is the biggest ever in the company’s 34th year of operations.

TDC said that after paying Corporation Tax of EC$3, 980,204 and other interests, its profit is EC$7,720,306 compared to EC$8,213,981 in 2005.

The company is attributing the success of TDC due to growth experienced in the local economy last year largely as a result of an increase in stay over visitors, construction and other activities on St. Kitts related to preparations for Cricket World Cup and the construction of several villa and condominium projects, expansion work at the Medical University of the America on Nevis.

Nevis PM Calls For Healthier Lifestyles

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas has called for nationals to exercise more and lead positive healthy lifestyles.

The Prime Minster made the call during a brief ceremony on Monday where Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) presented a cheque for the construction of the Bird Rock athletic facility. Prime Minister Douglas said the inclusion of an exercise track was strategically planned.

“We need to have our people exercise more on a regular basis,” said the Prime Minister. “Apart from eating well, they must exercise, and so for the first time in this country we are going to provide a proper exercise track,” he explained, noting that persons who walk in popular areas such as Frigate Bay face challenges with vehicular traffic.

The new facility will eliminate that and other associated dangers.
