Ground Water Drilling To Start On Nevis

Equipment to commence drilling for additional water on Nevis arrived on the island late last week.  Senior scientist to the project, geologist, Dr. Ronald B. Hoag Jr. of Bedrock Exploration and Development Technologies (BEAD) in an interview with the Department of Information on Monday October 29, 2007, said that drilling would commence this week at the first drill site in the Hamilton Estate area which is at a high elevation.
 
“We received all the equipment which arrived Thursday and was offloaded Friday and Saturday.  We are currently to moving the casings and drill rig up to the first drill site at Hamilton Estate and hope to start drilling in a next day or so. We are going to drill the first well up at Hamilton, that’s an area which needs water, it’s on high elevation and we should be done drilling that location in about 2 weeks,” he said. 
 
The Geologist explained that much preparatory work had been done ahead of this stage in the water exploration venture.

Nevis Premier Commends Teachers

Premier of Nevis and Minister of Education, the Hon. Joseph Parry told members of the teaching fraternity on the island that they had done a great job in steering the children of Nevis to excellence and should be given credit for their interest and commitment.  He told them they would be rewarded for their efforts.
 
The Premier commended the teachers on Friday October 26, 2007 which was observed as Professional Day for teachers on Nevis. The annual event hosted by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Nevis Teachers Union (NTU), now in its 23rd year, was held at the Four Seasons Resort, under the theme “Raising the standard: Empowering Teachers for quality Performance.  Mr. Conrad Liburd, a former Principal of the Gingerland Secondary School was this year’s honoree.
 
Mr. Parry noted that the government had begun to examine ways to empower the teachers and to develop programmes to assist them professionally.

Elderly Of Nevis To Have Life & Times Documented

Minister of Social Development Hon. Hensley Daniel had high praise and words of encouragement for the residents of the Flambouyant Nursing Home on Friday October 26, 2007, when he told them that they formed part of the living history of the island and their work was not done. He said they were an important component in an initiative by the Ministry of Culture, to document their life and times.
 
The Minister who also holds the portfolio for Health and Culture in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) made remark at an open day, the Home’s final activity in the month of October which had been set aside to celebrate the life and times of the elderly. 
 
“God is not finished with you yet, there is still more work for you to do and the young people in this country have a tremendous amount of information to gain from you.
 
“In the Ministry of Culture we are starting a documentation of the life and times of the outstanding work and achievements of our elderly people. So please hang around till we get it started it is going to be soon. I want them [Department of Culture] to be able to come and talk to you so that succeeding generations will recognise that the society did not start with all these paved roads and television,” he said.

Nevis Premier To Expand Cruise Tourism

In keeping with the Nevis Reformation Party’s manifesto promise to enhance the Tourism market in Nevis, Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry is taking important measures to develop the cruise industry on the island.

In a recent Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Conference held from October 8-12, 2007, in Cozumel, Mexico. Mr. Parry was accompanied by Permanent Secretary in Tourism, Mr. Tyrone O’Flaherty, Advisor to Tourism, Mr. Alistair Yearwood and Ministry of Tourism officer, Miss Nicole Liburd.

The Premier and the Nevis delegation had formal meetings with Carnival, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas and Princess Cruise Lines. Afterwards, informal meetings were held with Holland- America and Windstar Cruises.

“Many cruise executives were unaware of Nevis’ ability to handle any form of Cruise industry because Nevis does not have berthing facilities, but it is important to note that the Cayman islands also does not have such facilities and continues to do very well in the cruise industry,” says Mr. Yearwood.

Additional Financing For St. Kitts – Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis is among several Caribbean nations that is getting special assistance to promote food security as Italy has announced additional financing which will result in the beneficial countries taking advantage of trade liberalization while reaping the benefits of new trading opportunities provided under an innovative FAO project.

According to the FAO, trade liberalisation can harm small vulnerable economies such as the Caribbean (CARICOM/CARIFORUM) group of 15 countries which, with a population of 23 million, risk losing their traditional, protected markets and are generally ill-equipped to compete in the global market place.

The project, “Promoting CARICOM/CARIFORUM Food Security,” originally due to last four years, has just been extended for another three years to 2010. Italy, which provided initial funding of approximately US$5 million, has agreed to provide an additional US$3.3 million for a second phase.
