St. Kitts – Nevis Cultural Dance Workshop

Cultural dancers in St. Kitts spent some time last week learning techniques of a more modern dance in a tale of old school meets new style.

The Victoria Road Community Center was the venue for a hip-hop workshop which drew young dancers of the hip-hop genre but also appealed to more seasoned performers from traditional dance groups including Vivace, Okolo Tegremantine as well as Christian groups Hebrew Brothers and Divine Praise.

The workshop was organized by the Alliance Française in collaboration with the Department of Culture and facilitated by choreographer David Milome of Martinique. He was supported by team members Marie-Aude Ichane and Jean-Michel Garraud.

Bank Of Nevis Donates To Health Services On Nevis

Equipment to the tune of $21,000 was donated to the Community Health Services on Nevis by the Bank of Nevis at a brief handing over ceremony held at the Conference Room of the Administration Building, Charlestown on Tuesday February 26, 2008.
 
In accepting the gifts which include 6 Health-O-Meter scales, 6 examination lamps and 3 Dell computers was Minister of Health of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) the Hon. Hensley Daniel recorded the Administration’s gratitude for the bank who partnered in its provision of preventative care for young children and in Port health.
 
“We are indeed grateful for the bank joining us to be able to, as it were do interventive and preventive care with our young children at the Health Centers, so that if there are problems with growth and development of children the equipment provided will be able to help us.  In so far as it relates to Port health and the global exchanges taking place with travel, it is very important for us to be able to track diseases.

Nevis Hospital Receives Vital Sign Monitors

A number of high-tech machines were recently added to the Alexandra Hospital’s inventory of modern medical equipment.  Dr. Cardell Rawlins accepted two essential high-tech PRO PAQ Vital Sign Monitors on Wednesday February 27th 2008, on behalf of the hospital, from a well known local charitable organisation.
 
Dr. Rawlins, Medical Chief of Staff at the Alexandra Hospital, expressed gratitude to the President of the Alexandra Hospital Infirmary Auxiliary, Ms. Claristine Claxton for the Monitors which cost EC $57,457.72.
 
“I would like to say a hearty thank you to Ms. Claxton and the Auxiliary and we hope that our partnership with them can continue,” he said.

Nevis Government Discusses National HIV/AIDS Plan

Stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDS on Nevis, had the opportunity to make their final comments on a draft National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan for St. Kitts and Nevis for 2008 to 2012, at a one day workshop on February 27, 2008 at the Red Cross conference room in Charlestown.
 
The consultation which was hosted by the National AIDS Secretariat and the Nevis AIDS Coordination Unit, would ultimately determine the success of St. Kitts and Nevis in the reduction of the spread of HIV/AIDS and its impact on individuals, families and the community over the next five years.
 
Acting Health Planner/HIV/AIDS Coordinator on Nevis Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd told the Department of Information, that the primary reason for the session was to get feedback from the stakeholders, a follow up exercise from a consultation in 2007 with various interest groups on the island.

St. Kitts – Nevis Bird Rock Stadium Nearly Complete

Members of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the CARIFTA Games were visibly excited on Monday as they witnessed activities leading to the completion of the Bird Rock athletic stadium.

“I can say I am pleased with what I have seen,” Chairman of the Local Organising Committee Lester Hanley told SKNIS. “The track is about 75 percent complete and should be completed this week and ready for marking (of the lanes) next week. The temporary stands should arrive on site during the course of this week and the seats for the grand stand will also be here this week,” he added noting that offices being constructed as part of that structure are 90 percent complete.

Mr. Hanley commented that the registration process for athletes and supporters coming for the March 21 to 24 event has been positive and indicated that the numbers continue to rise daily.
