Economic Growth demands additional investments in roads says Nevis’ Minister of Social Transformation.

The Joseph Parry Administration continued to positively impact the lives of the people of Nevis as residents of Cox and surrounding areas, will be outfitted with an improved network of village roads.
 
Area representative for  St. Johns Constituency and Minister of Social Transformation and Community Development the Hon. Hensley Daniel who is also a resident of Cox, had the honor to break ground to signal the official start of the project. The ceremony took place at the Gazebo in Cox on Wednesday April 16, 2008. 
 
Minister Daniel said the construction of the road from Pancho to Chicken Stone was vital to the delivery of goods and services and would decrease the cost of vehicle maintenance.
 
He pointed out that no major road improvement, road construction or repairs had taken place in these areas for the last 30 years and it was an opportune time to do a total road rehabilitation.

Student Councils Leadership Workshop Culminates With Cocktail Reception

A two-day leadership workshop for students organised by the Department of Education in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) held under the theme “Empowering our Youth for Future Leadership”, culminated on April 16, 2008, with a cocktail reception which was held at the Old Manner Hotel in Gingerland.
 
Through the courtesy of Premier of Nevis and Minister of Education Hon. Joseph Parry, the cocktail was held in honor of both Primary and Secondary School’s Student body Councils. Mr. Parry told the young leaders he had enjoyed the discussion he had with them as one of the workshop’s facilitators.
 
Premier Parry disclosed that he was pleased the future leaders were motivated to attend the two-day leadership course and more importantly, he hoped they had learnt numerous things that would make a difference in their lives and therefore would encourage them to pursue good leadership through positive reinforcement.
 
“I hope all of you will continue to be friends and that this group of young people will never forget each other. I want you to form a [human] ring around the island and understand we are one people and if you demonstrate this, you would help to remove the negative things that are taking place in our society,” the Premier said.

St. Kitts – Nevis Foreign Service Officers To Visit Taiwan

Foreign Service Officers to be hosted by Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs 

On the 18th of April 2008, three representatives from the Federation will depart for the Republic on China (Taiwan) where they will be hosted by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  Ms. Karina Phillips, Nyian Farrell and Angelica Elliott will represent the Federation and participate in the “2008 Seminar for Diplomats from the Caribbean Region.”

The Seminar will be conducted by Taiwan’s Foreign Service Institute and will include lectures by high level officials.  Subject matters will include the Foreign Policy of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Relations between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits, the Learning of Basic Chinese and the development of Small Enterprises and Agriculture on Taiwan.   The seminar will also include tours of centers of cultural importance and meet and greets with other Foreign Service officials.

UK Gives US$1.2 Million Grant To PANCAP

The United Kingdom Department of International Development (DFID) is pumping US$1.2 million into the Pan-Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP).

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Wednesday between St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) Representative, Jane Armstrong, during the Opening Ceremony of the 10th Meeting of the Regional Coordinating Mechanism of the Pan-Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel and Casino.

The grant of £600,000 (about US$1.2 million) to PANCAP is to support its core budget until June 2009.

“This contribution by DFID represents the first practical commitment to the principle of pooled funding that PANCAP has advocated for some time now; and we applaud DFID for this pioneering effort,” said Prime Minister Douglas when he delivered the feature address.

Dr. Douglas used the opportunity to place on record his personal thanks and those of his colleague Prime Ministers to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the European Union (EU), German Development Bank, The Global Fund, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID), United States Government and the World Bank for the funding support provided through PANCAP since its birth in 2001.

St. Kitts & Nevis to be represented at 14th International Young Diplomats Program in Turkey

Mr. Eustace T. Wallace, Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is set to travel to Ankara, Turkey on Saturday to participate in the 14th International Young Diplomats Program being coordinated by the Foreign Service Training Center of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.

St. Kitts & Nevis will be among 48 countries participating in this six week program and it promises to be one that will enhance our own capacity in the areas of understanding Turkish foreign policy, culture, history as well as the art of diplomacy, negotiation, protocol and international politics in that key area of the world.  The program is premised on Turkey’s promise to emphasize the improvement of relations with relatively young states who are desirous of establishing a strong and effective foreign service to act as a bulwark of national growth.
