Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry and Junior Minister of Public Utilities, Natural Resources and Environment in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Carlisle Powell along with Operations Manager at the Nevis Water Department Mr. George Morris visited two newly discovered water sites on Nevis to analyse their status.

Premier Parry, who registered his satisfaction with the progress and commended those involved in the project.

“I congratulate the minister and the ministry and Bedrock Exploration and Development Technologies (BEAD) for working so seriously and so hard.  They have identified a well that is producing 500, 000 gallons of water per day and that water will be in the Maddens reservoir to be distributed around the island of Nevis.”

“I am proud of the government and the people I have elected, even though I am part of it and head of it.  We have demonstrated once again that we are keeping our promises and that our people come first,” Mr. Parry said.

The wells at Maddens in St. James’ Parish and Business Ghaut in St. George’s Parish were two of the more successful wells that have been discovered on the island since BEAD commenced deep drilling for additional water on the island.

“This area will be producing the most water in Nevis when we add this well to the other well that is there,” said Mr. Parry on site at the well in Maddens.

Federation To Review Minimum Wage

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
June 11, 2008 (SKNIS)

The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is pleased with the high level of participation during the first stage of the minimum wage review process and is now awaiting submissions from partner agencies.

The first consultation was held on June 5, at the conference room of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and was attended by approximately 30 representatives from the public and private sector.

“In my opinion the meeting was very fruitful [as] it took the form of an interactive dialogue,” Astona Browne, Permanent Secretary in Ministry of Labour said during an interview for the SKNIS radio magazine programme, Perspectives. “Members present gave their views on the proposal of the minimum wage and there was consensus on the matter.”

Government initiated the pay scale review in an attempt to ensure that workers at the lower end of the income bracket can cope with the spiraling global cost of food and oil which threatens to drive millions into poverty in countries around the world.

PM Douglas Says Region Will Fight HIV/AIDS

Basseterre, Saint Kitts – Nevis
June 11, 2008 (CUOPM)

The Caribbean region remains resolute and steadfast as it moves towards building the national and regional architecture that will ensure the attainment of universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support services by 2010 and sustainability beyond.

“Today, I feel vindicated to be in a position to present the largely positive mid-term scorecard of the Caribbean to this 2008 High-Level Meeting on AIDS of the General Assembly of the United Nations. For us, it is particularly gratifying to note that 21 countries of the Caribbean submitted assessment reports on their progress in achieving the key indicators adopted at the 2006 UNGASS meeting. The completion of this unprecedented number of reports demonstrates both commitment and forward movement at the country level,” said St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and CARICOM’s Lead Spokesman on HIV/AIDS and health related matters.

Dr. Douglas told Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers of Health and representatives of non-governmental organisations at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that two years ago, he had the honour of addressing the august body for the second time and he then committed the Caribbean to achieving universal access to HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support services by the year 2010.

“It was bold pronouncement on the part of the Caribbean considering the twin problems of a region with the second highest prevalence of HIV infection in the world and limited technical and financial resources that the region had to surmount in order to achieve this milestone. Indeed, there were many observers who considered such a declaration to be fanciful. But we held forth then and remain convinced now that overcoming the challenges of AIDS is an absolute imperative that must consume our every being if we are not to squander the significant social and economic gains of the last half a century that our forbears have bought at such a high price with their blood and sweat and tears,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
