Teen Mothers Group Meets In Nevis

Teenage mothers on Nevis now have the opportunity to transform their lives, through a new Teen Mothers  Programme launched recently by the Gender Affairs Unit, Department of Social Services in the Nevis Island Administration at a private Villa at the Four Seasons Resort Estates. 

Minister with responsibility for Social Transformation Hon. Hensley Daniel told the participants of the project that they should regard it as an opportunity to take control of how their lives turned out.

 He said they now had a support system and a government who would provide opportunities for them to expand their horizons through education and to become productive persons in the community.
 
According to Mr. Daniel, prior to 2006, teenage mothers were abandoned by all four institutions that were able to guide them ­ the home, church, community and schools.

Nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis from several areas of England converged on Leeds on Sunday to mark the Federation’s 25th Anniversary of Independence.

According to Kittitian Cris Collins, nationals residing in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester turned out in large numbers to attend the Service of Thanksgiving at the St. Martins Church.

He said that local Member of Parliament, Hon. Fabian Hamilton along with the Deputy Mayor of Leeds were among the officials who attended the service, which was led by  Rev. Steven.

The Sermon was delivered by Bishop Beulah Lee who gave the sermon.

St. Kitts and Nevis’ High Commissioner to the Court of St. James, His Excellency Dr. James Williams, delivered the 2008 Independence Message from the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.

In his message, Prime Minister Douglas said the special milestone is celebrated in the knowledge that the citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis have been able to make significant strides in the socio-economic development in spite of the numerous challenges faced.

The Tourism Awareness Month now has its slogan for 2008, thanks to the participation of the public in the Tourism Month Slogan Competition. At a brief ceremony held at the Royal St. Kitts Hotel and Casino, the slogan, “Tourism ““ The Time Is Now. The Opportunity, Yours” was unveiled to rapturous applause by the Minister of State of Tourism, Sports and Culture and Mrs. Rosecita Jeffers, CEO of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority. The winning slogan was submitted by Mrs. Sharon Hetherington of Calypso Bay.

In his brief remarks, Minister of State of Tourism, Sports and Culture, Richard Skerritt reflected on the judges’ choice of the Slogan. “I think the judges were moving in the direction of people empowerment and the need for our people to see the industry as an ongoing evolution of opportunities.” He added, “Tourism is a very solid and important sector for the future of our independence. And while we celebrate our independence, our heroes and other things in our community that have allowed us to get to this point in time, this is an attempt to remind people that it is the tourism sector that will be the focal point of wealth creation and improving the quality of life for our people.”

The Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) led Nevis Island Administration(NIA) has made another manifesto  promise a reality, with the official opening of the St. James Drag Race Strip.

Premier Joseph Parry in declaring the new track open at New River, in the Parish of St.James, said the track was for the people of Nevis, particularly   the young people!

“My administration has displayed that we care for the young people of Nevis by facilitating training programs which were recently undertaken by 17 persons who received the opportunity to learn masonry, carpentry, plumbing and a host of other skills. Now we the (NIA) have facilitated a drag strip, to keep the young men occupied and skilled,” articulated Premier Parry.

The St.James Drag strip which came at a cost of EC$ 3million will provide an opportunity to business persons from Butlers, Bricklyn and Zion to gain tremendously from the race track as residents will be able to sell food, accommodations and mechanic services.
