St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affiars, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said Thursday that the twin-island Federation which became an independent nation some 25 year ago has achieved much despite a multitude of problems.

Addressing the 63rd Regular Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Douglas said that the St. Kitts and Nevis experience demonstrates that good governance and prudent management of one’s resources; appropriate investment in people and systems, protecting people’s freedom of association, religion, and speech; the support and facilitation of a free and vibrant press; success at advancing the socio-economic well-being of one’s people; and the upholding of democratic ideals, are determined not by land mass, but by national character and political commitment.

“They are the result, not of demographic or geographic size, but of long-standing socio-cultural traditions. They are a function, not of GDP, but of an entrenched ethos of striving and determination. Our faith has steadied our resolve and belief in ourselves and our future. And of course, along the way, we have relied understandably on institutions such as our beloved United Nations,” he said.

Prime Minister Douglas pointed out that through its United Nations membership, St. Kitts and Nevis has built important and strategic partnerships and stood shoulder to shoulder with other member states to protect its individual rights and collective freedoms and have fought battles far bigger than the expectation for a country of its size.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Sports and Culture Lloyd Lazar said that there is a definite link between the celebration of Tourism Awareness and Independence.

He explained that Tourism is an important component of the development of the Federation and it is quite appropriate that the activities of the month fall under the banner of the Silver Jubilee Anniversary celebrations.

Upcoming events include the launch of the month on Saturday, September 27 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at 10:00 am.

Mr. Lazar noted that the activities that will take place during the month itself, provide an opportunity to demonstrate the partnership that exists between government and the private sector. As such, some of the collaborative events include a Small Hotel Retreat from October 1 to 3, organized by the Hotel and Tourism Association and a Small and Medium Business Enterprise Workshop from October 13 to 16 coordinated by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Collaborations with other government ministries and departments have given rise to a Farmers and Fishers Recognition Ceremony on World Food Day, October 16, that is being organized by the Department of Agriculture as well as the Launch of National Carnival on October 31 being carried out by the National Carnival Committee.

October is Financial Literacy Month in St. Kitts and Nevis and officials are stressing discipline as analysts become increasingly concerned over the impact of a worsening global economic and financial climate.

“Manage Your Money…Live Your Dreams” is the theme for the observance which is also being marked in the seven other member territories that use the EC dollar making up the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU).

During an interview on SKNIS Perspectives, Sybil Welsh, Deputy Director of Corporate Relations at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank said that the theme was designed to remind residents of the ECCU that they can accomplish their dreams.

“Maybe a person wants to be a homeowner. Maybe a person wants to be a business owner, or a college graduate, or a land owner, or owner of a car,” she stated. “Whatever those dreams are it requires planning, and managing one’s money and setting goals and achieving them incrementally. If we plan, we can live our dreams.”

Highlighting such, is exactly why Financial Literacy Month was conceived in 2002 after a directive was given by ECCU Heads of Government. Since then, the ECCB has partnered with public and private sector agencies and the media to increase the awareness and understanding of the population of the need to save and invest.
