Nevis Disaster Management Facility Named After Former Coordinator

The Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry and Her Excellency, Mary Ourisman, the United States Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, unveiled the  new name of the Nevis Disaster Management Facility at Long Point on Thursday afternoon.

The name of the facility was revealed as the, Llewellyn Newton Disaster Management Facility.

During the ceremony, Premier Parry reminisced about his role as the First National Co-coordinator of Disaster Preparedness. He informed the audience that Mr. Llewellyn Newton was his able assistant.

“In those humble days it was just Mr. Newton and I who worked without an office, equipment or headquarters. Over the years Mr. Newton worked very hard to build a facility on the island of Nevis. He worked with CEDERA,St. Kitts and the Regional Police Forces and organizations. He was not afraid to ask, to seek assistance or beg and now out of these efforts, we have this building opened by the U.S ambassador today,” Premier Parry said.

The Department of Environment was both pleased and encouraged when the Sandy Point High School informed that it would be undertaking a beach clean up.

Andy Blanchette, Conservation Officer and Coordinator of the National Beach Clean Up expressed delight with the fact that the school, without being prompted, went ahead and coordinated the event which it carried out on Friday, November 07.  He said that he had been informed by Warren Wyatt, Head of the Sandy Point High Geography and Social Studies Division, that the students had been excited about taking part in the National Beach Clean Up which had been cancelled.  As a result, the school decided to clean the stretch of beach from Dieppe Bay, Golden Lemon to Caines’ Pasture.

Eastern Caribbean – Canada Debt Management Agreement

An agreement aimed at improving debt management in the countries making up the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) has been signed.

The agreement was signed Thursday between the Government of Canada, acting through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB).

The ECCB said that CIDA, represented by Minister Counsellor Douglas Williams, CIDA Head of Aid for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, and Sir K Dwight Venner, Governor of the ECCB, signed the Contribution Agreement of seven million two hundred thousand Canadian dollars (CAD$7,200,000.00).

Controlling HIV/AIDS In The Caribbean

Minister of Health Honourable Rupert Herbert stressed that HIV/AIDS presents a unique challenge to St. Kitts and Nevis and the rest of the world.

During the launch of activities for the World AIDS Campaign 2008 on Wednesday, the chief government health official noted that the world has seen many epidemics and managed to cure most successfully.

“Way back in the 14th century during the early industrial revolution in Europe, there was an epidemic called the Black Death which [killed millions] of persons. However, it was eradicated. There have been other epidemics such as tuberculosis, which have been eradicated,” Minister Herbert said. “Over 25 years ago, we first heard of AIDS and up to this moment, no one can say that a cure has been found for AIDS.”
