Charlestown, Nevis
February 06, 2008
Premier of Nevis and Minister of Finance Hon. Joseph Parry said that his Administration would take Nevis to unprecedented levels, unmatched in the Caribbean and the best place to live.
He made the comment on February 04, 2008 at Lower Stoney Grove during a ground breaking ceremony to signal the commencement of works by Jamaican based Surrey Paving and Aggregate Ltd. on four major areas of road in Charlestown.
“We are taking Nevis to a level that would be unmatched in the Caribbean. Nevis must be and will be the envy of all the Caribbean with first class roads, with an outstanding water system, with good electricity and jobs in tourism, in technology and financial services and with some work in agriculture and fisheries and other industrial activities, Nevis will be a great place to live.
“The Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) is committed to you. We have said we will make it better for all Nevisians. Our manifesto had said this and we are doing this. We are doing your roads here and as we move from this area we will go to other parts of Stoney Grove, Ramsbury, Government Road and Hamilton but we will be going to the length and breath of Nevis over the years to make life better for Nevisians,” he said.
Mr. Parry underscored his Administration’s commitment to better standards for the people of Nevis and urged persons to continue to lend their support to the Nevis Reformation Party in government.
“We are for the people to make people comfortable”¦ the road is to make people comfortable, to make the children the safe but more than that and more importantly, as we do the roads we are going to take away the water. We are going to take the rivers away that run through Charlestown every time there is a serious down pour of rain. We are going to make sure that this place is safe and better of all times.
I say to you support your government, support your parliamentarian, I am not ashamed to tell you that we need your support, we are asking for your support and we anticipate your support,” he said.
Meantime, moments before he broke ground, Area Representative for the St. Pauls Constituency Hon. Robelto and a resident of Stoney Grove, Hon. Robelto Hector told fellow residents that the new roads would raise the profile of the area which had for many years been referred to as the back part of Stoney Grove.
He said major works in the affected areas were in keeping with a campaign promise to the people of the area that he would provide constituents with a better standard of living.
“You would imagine how happy I feel this afternoon because a promise made is a promise that you must keep and I feel good knowing today that I am keeping that promise that I made to the good people of Stoney Grove.
“We [Nevis Reformation Party ““ led Nevis Island Administration (NIA)] made a promise to the people of Stoney Grove before we got into office, you fully well know they [public] referred to this place as the back path of Stoney Grove well from today we are not going to have a back path we are going to have a highway on this side of Stoney Grove,” he said.
While he underscored the significance of the new road, the Minister noted that serious work in that area began since the change in Administration in 2006.
“When we came into office we had a task to deliver roads and as a government we have delivered. When we began there were Doubting Thomases that in a short while this government could not have delivered. I ask you today where are these people? I want you to remember this party as a party that delivers. Remember this government as a government that delivers, while they are doubting we are working”¦
“When I began my journey as a politician you embraced me, I offer you this afternoon love, I enjoy your support and I want you to know from the depths of my heart, a promise made would be a promise,” he said.
The ceremony which was attended by other Cabinet colleagues was chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communication and Works Mr. Ernie Stapleton Pastor Denzil Roberts gave the invocation and the vote of thanks was delivered by Stoney Grove resident Ms. Idella Newton.
