“Construction is being done all around the island, even through these difficult times,” Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry remarked as he and Deputy Premier, Hon. Hensley Daniel visited three construction sites on Nevis recently.
Prominent Nevisian Contractor, Analdo Chiverton led the tour through the construction site of the Horsfords Valumart which is located at Stoney Grove. It is expected to be completed by April 2011.
Mr. Chiverton said the shopping center will have a deli, bakery, pharmacy, and furniture showroom. Presently, 40 persons are employed on the construction site and according to the Contractor, that number will increase as construction continues.
Next, Premier Parry and Hon. Daniel were guided by Mr. Chiverton at the construction site of a manufacturing plant which would produce Oxygen, Nitrogen and Acetylene. The name of the company is Island Gases Company Ltd. and it is located in Prospect, behind the Cherry Gardens Housing Project.
On completion, the plant will have the capacity to produce up to 80 cylinders per day and have a staff of 10-12 persons.
Marketing for the gas products has been explored in the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and other regional islands.
During the tour of the construction site, Premier Parry enquired about the start up time for the gas company. Mr. Chiverton informed the Premier that the plant will be on stream as soon as the building is finished, which is slated for later this year.
Meanwhile, the final stop on the tour was a visit to the Performing Arts Center led by Project Manager Mr. Dwight Powell.
He told Premier Parry and Mr. Daniel that the Performing Arts Center was proceeding on schedule. Mr. Powell also informed the touring party that there are four Nevis sub-contractors and 90 percent of the workers are Nevisians.
In detailing the final product of the Fine Arts Center, he said that the facility would include: seating, a grand hall, a stage and a courtyard.
Premier Parry told the Department of Information at the end of the tour, that he was pleased to see that in these sluggish economic times construction could bring quality employment and a boost to the Nevis economy.
