Nevis’ Minister of Communication, Works, Public Utilities, Post, Physical Planning, Natural Resources and the Environment in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) Hon. Carlisle Powell, was praised by officials of the Organisation of American States (OAS) for his unwavering support for the development of renewable energy on Nevis.
The acclaim for Mr. Powell came when OAS Representative to St. Kitts and Nevis Mr. Starret Greene, delivered a presentation of Energy Audit Findings and recommendations during Nevis’ week of activities in observation of Caribbean Energy Week. The function was held on November 12, 2012, at the Llewellyn Newton Disaster Management Facility at Long Point.
“He [Minister Powell] has been front and centre of all the energy related programmes and initiatives that have been jointly undertaken by the OAS, in cooperation with the Government of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, working through the local Nevis Island Administration.
“Minister Powell’s unwavering support for the development of renewable energy on Nevis and the leadership he has provided in this area, has won the applause of the OAS officials in our Department of Sustainable Development (DSD). Mr. Minister, please accept my organisation’s appreciation and satisfaction for your sincere collaboration and continued cooperation,” he said.
I would like to meet parties interested in forming a bio diesel co-operative when I am on island from 3 January to 15 January 2013.
I have an outline proposal for a pilot project which needs land owners to cultivate, with government approval, jatropha. Once the harvest has reached an acceptable level of production it is my aim to provide the plant and expertise to extract bio-diesel from the fruit. Untreated bio-diesel is suitable for use in the islands diesel power plants. Treated bio-diesel can be used in boat and vehicle diesel engines.
