Minister of Agriculture on Nevis Hon. Robelto Hector made an appeal to the public to not allow the global economic meltdown to shadow the efforts being made to solve hunger and poverty. Instead they should redouble the efforts that were being made through the use of technology.
The call came on Thursday while he delivered remarks at an Open Day of the St. Kitts and Nevis Taiwan Agricultural Project at Cades Bay under the theme “Intensive Farming Demonstration Tour”. The event which was attended by farmers, students and parents, was sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture on Nevis and the Taiwan Technical Mission.
“The current world food crisis can be overcome with greater emphasis on science, extension and education. This powerful combination is critical to agricultural development,” he said.
The Minister urged the farmers who had the opportunity to view a range of techniques during the Open Day to make maximum use of the technology that they were exposed to at the demonstration farm.
Notwithstanding, he said the Ministry along with the Taiwanese Mission would continue to seek to expose Nevis’ farmers to creative and innovative approaches to farming through the use of technology, to ensure they remained in the business of farming.
He said it was the business of the government to ensure that the appropriate technology was transferred to the farmers and the farmers adopted it.
The Minister said the open day came at a critical time on Nevis’ agriculture calendar since the Ministry and Department of Agriculture were preparing for the annual Agricultural Open Day which showcased everything agriculture on Nevis for two days.
Mr. Hector also used the opportunity to thank Dr. Keng Feng Chen for his work done with the Nevis Island Administration in the past and welcomed the new Mission Leader Mr. Mars Shiue.
