Agriculture officials on Nevis plan to hope to bring together all aspects of agriculture to share the gospel of agricultural production and to highlight its importance in the island’s development.

Minister of Agriculture Hon. Robelto Hector shared that view in a recent interview with the Department of Information.

“I look for the participation in schools in terms of the pot gardens. I am also hoping that we could this year master the link between our food nutrition in schools and what we have in the field, given our global times now, you would realise the importance of the Department of Agriculture within the whole economy,” he said.

Mr. Hector also pointed to the three annual activities organised by the Department of Agriculture ““ the Agriculture Open Day which is held in March; the Fruit Festival in July and World Food Day activities in October ““ which he said he looked forward to along with “Eye on Agriculture” a weekly half hour programme which showcased all things agriculture on NTV. It is hosted by the Department’s Communications Officer Mr. Eric Evelyn.

He also discussed the need for a revival of some cooperatives which had been dormant and made specific reference to the New River farming community.

“I would like to see New River back where we have farmers settled in the irrigation project and making their contribution. In my mind, the government is doing a lot but I would like to see more farmer involvement.

“The land is here we would want greater farmer involvement and it is my aim in reviving the corporative to have farming activity and farmers participation in agriculture here on the island,” he said.
