Over 5000 passengers entered St Kitts on Icon of the Seas
Saint Kitts and Nevis marked a major milestone in its expanding cruise tourism industry on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, when the Federation welcomed the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, for its inaugural Caribbean stop. As one of the most prestigious vessels in the Royal Caribbean Fleet, the ship’s arrival brought excitement and celebration to the islands during its maiden voyage from Miami, which began on January 27.
A Grand Welcome for a Historic Arrival
The occasion was attended by some of the nation’s highest officials and distinguished guests. Governor General Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd, Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew, Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials, and foreign dignitaries were present to greet the vessel. Among the notable attendees were His Excellency Michael Lin, Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and Mr. Ernest Amory, Honorary Consul of Italy.
Following the official welcome ceremony, guests were invited on an exclusive tour of the state-of-the-art cruise liner, adding significance to the celebration.
Prime Minister Celebrates National Progress
Prime Minister Drew expressed great pride in Saint Kitts and Nevis being chosen as the first Caribbean destination for the Icon of the Seas. He emphasized the Federation’s steady progress and rising prominence in the global tourism landscape.
He noted that the ship’s arrival highlights the country’s reputation for beauty, hospitality, and adventure. It also reflects the strength of the nation’s longstanding relationship with Royal Caribbean and its growing status as a preferred cruise destination.
Honoring Past Leadership and Vision
Prime Minister Drew credited former Minister of Tourism Ricky Skerritt and former Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil Douglas for their visionary leadership. He recalled their strategic foresight from nearly a decade earlier, when they championed the construction of piers capable of accommodating mega cruise ships long before such vessels existed.
He acknowledged that today’s success is the direct result of early planning and investment, proving the value of long-term vision in national development.
Tourism Minister Highlights Industry Milestones
Minister of Tourism Hon. Marsha Henderson described the moment as extraordinary, noting the striking contrast between the world’s largest cruise ship and the Caribbean’s smallest federation. She said this contrast symbolizes the wonder of tourism, which connects people and cultures across borders.
Minister Henderson emphasized the importance of the enduring partnership between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Royal Caribbean. This collaboration has been instrumental in elevating the islands to global prominence as a premier cruise destination.
Commitment to Sustainable Tourism
Prime Minister Drew reiterated the government’s dedication to advancing sustainable tourism practices. He highlighted the alignment between the nation’s Sustainable Island State agenda and Royal Caribbean’s “Seastanability” initiative.
He stressed the importance of protecting natural heritage while fostering growth within the tourism industry, ensuring that development remains responsible and forward-thinking.
A Promising Future for Tourism
Prime Minister Drew extended gratitude to the Royal Caribbean Group, the engineers behind the Icon of the Seas, and the many professionals who contribute to the Federation’s thriving tourism sector. Their collective efforts helped make this historic moment possible.
Minister Henderson also expressed optimism, noting that Saint Kitts and Nevis is poised for one of its most successful tourism seasons. With increasing visitor arrivals and strengthened industry partnerships, the Federation is well positioned for continued growth and international recognition.
