Minister of Social Transformation the Hon Hensley Daniel told a team of Cuban Social Workers who formed part of the Energy Saving Bulb Replacement Programme that their time on Nevis was valuable time spent getting to know and learn the culture of Nevisians.
 
Mr. Daniel’s comment came on Monday May 21st at the Community Centre on Hanleys Road, while he bade farewell to the 30 social workers who left Nevis on Tuesday May 22nd for their homeland Cuba.
 
“The bulbs represent a tremendous opportunity for us to build inter cultural and inter personal relations and in a world which is increasingly global, we thank you very much for affording us the opportunity to build those relationships,” he said as he demonstrated his bilingual skills.
 
The team had concluded a one month stay on the island while they replaced a total of 43,636 of a planned 45,000 bulbs as part of the energy saving bulbs programme. The energy saving programme an initiative of the Cuban Government was brought to Nevis through Premier the Hon. Joseph Parry’s discussions with the Cuban authorities. The Cuban Government extended the programme to a number of islands in the Caribbean including St. Kitts and Nevis.

Director of Agriculture on Nevis Dr. Kelvin Daly, announced that the Department of Agriculture would cease to conduct any business with persons convicted or even suspected of praedial  and livestock larceny.
 
He made the disclosure on Monday May 21, 2007 during an interview with the Department of Information, in the wake of two arrests last weekend which involved a major butcher on the island for the larceny of livestock.
 
He said the theft of items having to do with farming whether livestock or root crops, had reached unbearable proportions and had become a sore matter for the Department.
 
“The Department of Agriculture has been trying to tackle this problem for a long time. We think it’s time that we came out and discussed the matter publicly and we are taking a very strong stand on this matter. We have decided that any persons found guilty or even suspected of we will cease doing business with those persons immediately until the resolution of the matter. 
 
“This morning (Monday) I wrote to the gentlemen in this matter, advising them that the Department will cease doing business with them until the case has been resolved. I think that the situation is very serious because it involved one of our major butchers on the island and we are appealing to people to be on the lookout for meats that did not pass through the process at the Abattoir,” he said.

Caribbean tourism ministers traveling to New York for Caribbean Week 2007 from June 9-17 will get the chance to interact with New York-based nationals, at two town hall meetings being organized by the Caribbean Tourism Development Company (CTDC).

The meetings will be held simultaneously in Brooklyn and the Bronx on Monday, June 11, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

The discussion sessions, which will cover all aspects of Caribbean tourism, are expected to attract a wide audience, including young adults interested in pursuing a career in the industry, investors, potential vacationers and Caribbean nationals, who simply want to keep in touch.

Hugh Riley, one of the event organizers, said that the meetings present “a rare opportunity for visiting tourism ministers and officials to share information and exchange ideas with Caribbean nationals in the New York area”.

The events, he said, will provide “free-flowing exchange for those who are passionate about their countries of origin and eager to play a part in the further development of the region.”

The CARICOM Youth Ambassador Programme (CYAP) is playing a significant role in the region’s thrust to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to address the growing digital divide and the need to improve efficiency and marketability in all sectors.

The body was represented by its media advisor Ian Richards of St. Kitts and Nevis, at the inaugural meeting of the Regional ICT Steering Committee. The committee was established to advise, influence and guide the CARICOM Secretariat in managing and coordinating the advancement of ICT and the Information Society in member territories by leveraging the efforts of existing regional organisations.

The committee, which will mainly focus on the implementation of the CARICOM Single Market Economy (CSME) and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal, met on Wednesday, May 16, at the Le Meridien Pegasus Hotel in Guyana.

“It was important for the CYAP to have a voice at this meeting,” Richards said. “Our programme offers fresh and innovative thinking to the Secretariat on various topics and how they impact young people. Everyone agrees that it is critical for youth to be trained and positioned to take advantage of the numerous ICT possibilities and we will ensure resources are mobilized to achieve such.”
