Premier Parry To Attend OECS Heads Meeting

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 10TH 2007 (CUOPM)
St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is leading a six-person delegation to the 44th Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in Antigua and Barbuda.

Other members of the St. Kitts and Nevis delegation are Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris; Premier of Nevis, Hon. Joseph Parry; Cabinet Secretary in the Federal Government, Mr. Joseph Edmeade; Cabinet Secretary in the Nevis Island Administration, Mr. Ashley Farrell and Foreign Affairs Officer with responsibility for CARICOM Affairs, Ms. Nerys Chiverton.

The meeting will be Premier Parry’s first OECS Heads meeting since his Nevis Reformation Party (NRP) assumed office following the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) elections last July.

According to the St. Lucia-based Secretariat, the OECS Heads are expected to further advance the process towards an OECS Economic Union by reaching agreement on a public awareness and consultation campaign, with the Heads at the forefront.

NIA Supports Alexander Hamilton Scholarship Fund

CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 10, 2007)
Minister with responsibility for Social Transformation in the Nevis Island Administration the Hon. Hensley Daniel said the Administration’s interest and support for the Alexander Hamilton Scholarship Fund through the Department of Community Development, was in keeping with its commitment to provide education for all at every level.
 
The Hon. Hensley Daniel made the comment on Wednesday January 10, 2007, during an interview with the Department of Information at his Charlestown office on the eve of the Fund’s Tea Party, which is scheduled to be re launched, after a six- year absence, on Thursday January 11, on the grounds of the Museum History at 4pm.
 
“This [Tea Party] marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Hamilton who became the first Secretary of the Treasury in the United States and so we want to use part of our history to create opportunities for the development of our young people. This has been done successfully in the past and the New Nevis Reformation Party Government will re start this fund, so that most students will benefit and students will know we [NIA] are working at different levels to provide educational opportunities for them.

Volcano Warning – Ash Fall Can Cause Problems In Nevis

Asthma sufferers and people with certain types of allergies are being warned to remain indoors and keep their medications close at hand today.

This advice comes in the aftermath of volcanic activity in the Soufriere Hills Volcano on the nearby island of Montserrat, which shot a large cloud of ash more than five miles into the sky during an eruption yesterday.

It is believed that the ash fall could reach Saint Kitts – Nevis, beginning last night and extending into a good part of today, hence the warning that it could cause health-related and respiratory problems.

Nevis Island Hosts Fifth Annual Olympic Triathlon

The Nevis Cycle and Triathlon Club is gearing up for the 5th Annual Olympic Triathlon . The event, known as Carino Nevis Olympic Triathlon, attracts athletes from all over the world. This race features two courses: an Olympic distance course including a 1500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10-kilometer run and the shorter Sprint distance course covering exactly one-half the Olympic course and consisting of a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run.

The entry fee for the Olympic course is $75 (US) and $45 (US) for the Sprint Course. Thanks to the generosity of the triathlon’s sponsor, Carino Health Spa, a division of the Norwegian firm, Carino Nevis, Ltd. Carino is currently developing Hamilton Estate, a luxury villa/condominium resort complex with a state-of-the-art health spa on Nevis.
