St. Kitts and Nevis Minister of Health, Hon. Rupert Herbert has disclosed plans to establish blood pressure stations within the community and in workplaces for persons with or without hypertension to monitor themselves.

Speaking at the launching of the first two automatic blood pressure monitors Wednesday morning, Minister Herbert urged residents to use them responsibly.

“Remember to consult a doctor or a nurse regarding your findings.  Take charge of your health and get checked at least annually,” said Minister Herbert during a ceremony down stairs of Government Headquarters.

He applauded the Development Bank of St. Kitts and Nevis for the goodwill gesture that shows concern for the community.

“As a result of your contribution we now can launch these two automatic blood pressure monitors. One will be strategically located here at Government Headquarters and at the other will be mounted at the Basseterre General Post Office for use by public sector workers and the general public,” said Minister Herbert, who hoped the nation’s corporate friends will partner with the Ministry to have more of such monitors located in business places, at workplaces and multi-purpose community centers across the country.

Mr. Herbert said high blood pressure can be easily detected. “When hypertension is not diagnosed in the early stages of the condition, there is a greater chance of developing serious complications. This is the main reason why it is critical to prevent hypertension in the first place or detect it in the beginning. Getting checked is the only way to know whether blood pressure is elevated or under control,” said Minister Herbert.

He said his Ministry plans to increase individual and community awareness about high blood pressure, as well as, reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

“Tracking your blood pressure on a regular basis can let you know if you are heading in the right direction. If your blood pressure is in the normal range – that’s good news for your health. Remember to keep track of your blood pressure and have it checked regularly. Your blood pressure can change with age and lifestyle changes, as well as with other medical conditions that you may undergo,” said Minister Herbert.

He said the devices do not nullify the role of the health centers and the doctor’s visits and this is a significant community service which complements the diabetes and hypertension clinics instituted at the hospitals and health centres.

“If your blood pressure is elevated, that is above 130/85, you should consult with your healthcare professional about lifestyle changes you can make to lower it. Drug treatment may be recommended by your physician but you should follow the prescribed therapy to stay in control of your blood pressure,” said Health Minister Herbert.
