Thirteen weeks of intense learning and practical work by novices and veteran ceramists have resulted in the forging of originally produced craft items, a testament of the potential that exists in locals.
Bowls, vases, mugs, wind chimes, plates, baking dishes, and kettles are among the more than 500 pieces that were produced by the “Potter’s Class of 2009.” Thirty-eight persons completed the workshop organized by the Craft House in collaboration with the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF).
“I love it,” Jacinth Laplace proclaimed, in March, after five weeks of sessions. “I am proud to be here, and I think (General Manager) Austin Weekes should also be proud because this workshop [is lovely].”
The items were produced at the Craft House, which continues to carry out Government’s mandate of equipping locals with various skills that will be necessary in the emerging economy in St. Kitts and Nevis. Tourism is one of the pillars of the new economy.
Experienced potter Carla Astaphan explained that “I am seeing things that I would never in my wildest dreams have thought of doing with clay. People have really explored the boundaries of clay. It’s a wonderful workshop and I’m really happy that I am taking part in it.”
Mr. Weekes told SKNIS that he was pleased with the outcome of the workshop facilitated by renowned ceramist Adam Azaire of St. Lucia. The general manager noted that the wide variety of creatively designed items will be featured in an exhibition.
The items will be on display at the Craft House Main Hall from Monday, May 18 to Thursday, May 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The exhibition moves to the St. Kitts Marriott Resort on Friday, May 22, when the official certification and sale of products takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Mr. Weekes extended an invitation to the public to attend these functions in a show of support for genuinely produced, high quality craft items.
