Nevis Premier Holds Talks With Chief Minister Of Anguilla

Premier of Nevis, the Hon Joseph Parry met with the Chief Minister of Anguilla, the Hon. Osborne Flemming to discuss matters relating to Tourism, the Economy and Immigration.

Premier Parry was accompanied by Deputy Premier-Hon. Hensley Daniel and Legal Adviser, the Hon. Patrice Nisbett, who initially attended a luncheon hosted by the Chief Minister at the Tenemos Resort Restaurant Zurra on Sunday, April 20th.

On Monday morning the talks continued when the entire Anguilla Island Administration Cabinet met with members of the Nevis Island Administration.  This time the discussion was based on the development of Anguilla and Nevis,Tourism and the progress the islands have made over the years.  The Chief Minister was very interested in the geothermal project and placed on record his excitement over the idea of seeing electricity being offered at a considerably less expensive rate.

The Chief Minister was also proud to inform the team that Anguillians have been investing large sums of money in their own country.  As a matter of fact, when they took an island tour, he showed off an area of about 300 acres of land which, he said, is being developed by Anguillians to the tune of one hundred million dollars.

Nevis Premier Addresses Labour Issues

Under the theme “A Better Workplace,” The Department of Labour in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) recently held a one day workshop which focused on contractors and employees awareness of the labour laws of Nevis. The event was held at the Red Cross conference room in Charlestown.
 
Premier of Nevis Hon. Joseph Parry used the session to bring some of the core issues unique to workplaces on the island and the fight against crime, two of the NIA’s main priorities since it took office.
 
He established that the employees on the island operated without a workers union but have been represented by the Department of Labour in the NIA.
 
Premier Parry indicated that some of the main responsibilities of the Department were to identify jobs, their availability, conditions in the workplace and wages.
 
Mr. Parry also spoke of the drawbacks the workforce encountered in his personal experience before the rise of Nevis‘ working families.

St. Kitts – Nevis Tourism Strategy Garners Results

The forecast by the Caribbean World Travel and Tourism Council that St. Kitts and Nevis will register the second highest tourism growth in the region of 5.6 percent, has been welcomed by local officials who stress that efforts must continue to consolidate the gains.

This week, Unoma Allen, Corporate Communications Manager of the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, appeared on SKNIS’ radio magazine programme, Perspectives and noted that the expansion of services with American Airlines and the newly formed relationship with Delta Airlines operating from Atlanta has yielded satisfactory results.

“This sort of information [comes] from the efforts that have been taking place over prior years and what we are doing now,” she stated. “Our destination is now open to many more people and as you’ve heard time and time again, Atlanta is the largest international airline hub in the world.”

Nevis Statistics Symposium Was Productive

Director of statistics in the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Ms. Laurel Bain in her presentation at a Statistics Symposium organized by the Department of Statistics and Economic Planning on Nevis, hailed the Symposium a long but productive process. Ms. Bain made the comment on April 1, 2008, while she gave a comprehensive analysis to establish progress made about the importance of statistics across the region.
 
She said over a long period, efforts were made to improve statistics in the region, with numerous reports made and recommendations put forward but implementations were lagged. Notwithstanding, renewed efforts were made to strengthened statistics as the monetary council of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) deliberated in 2007, for renewed efforts to be made to strengthen statistics, in light of the challenges.
 
“The Monetary Council agreed that a strategic approach to policy making was a prerequisite for sustainable growth and development in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) member countries. [Therefore] The monetary council recommended a number of measures to enhance the policy making process in the ECCU, which included the strengthening of the statistics offices and enhanced the statistical systems for data gathering, processing and dissemination.” Ms. Bain said.
